Ripple has announced a detailed four-stage strategy aimed at safeguarding the XRP Ledger from emerging quantum computing threats. The plan outlines a timeline to reach full quantum resistance by 2028 and underscores Ripple’s intent to address potential vulnerabilities before quantum computing achieves the capability to compromise current cryptographic protections.

Quantum computing’s challenge to digital assets

The security of most blockchain networks, including XRP Ledger, currently relies on elliptic curve cryptography, which classical computers are unable to break within a practicable timeframe. However, advances in quantum computing, as demonstrated in a March 2026 report by Google’s Quantum AI division, suggest these defenses could soon be at risk. Google’s researchers have shown that a quantum computer with 500,000 physical qubits could break elliptic curve cryptography and derive a private key from its public counterpart in about nine minutes.

This turning point, often described as “Q-Day” by cybersecurity experts, would expose wallets with publicly visible keys across most blockchains to major security threats. Ripple’s leadership believes that urgent action is required to get ahead of this technological milestone.

“The goal is not to wait until quantum computing becomes an immediate threat,” emphasized Ayo Akinyele, Ripple’s senior director of engineering, highlighting the importance of preparedness.

Mini dictionary: Q-Day—A cybersecurity term referring to the moment when quantum computers can efficiently break widely used public-key cryptography, making blockchain wallets with exposed public keys vulnerable to theft.

Four-stage quantum-resistance roadmap

Ripple’s first phase is an emergency protocol designed for rapid migration to quantum-secure infrastructure if significant threats emerge before the scheduled full upgrade. The second phase, now underway in the first half of 2026, involves a thorough evaluation of NIST-certified post-quantum cryptographic solutions, notably ML-DSA and Dilithium. This process is conducted in partnership with Project Eleven, an independent quantum security research group.

Later stages will include deploying formal amendments to the XRP Ledger to enable native post-quantum cryptography, with testnets targeted for mid-2026 deployment. Efficiency is a key consideration: for example, Dilithium signatures are up to 40 times larger than existing signatures, creating challenges for transaction speed and storage needs.

Latest vulnerability assessment and industry context

Recent analysis indicates that just 0.03% of all XRP tokens are held in inactive wallets with public key exposure—fewer than comparable metrics in Bitcoin, where many legacy addresses have public keys published on the blockchain. XRP addresses that have never made a transaction avoid this exposure, making them less likely to be targeted if quantum capabilities become a threat.

Ripple engineers point to a further complication: recent advances in artificial intelligence. Anthropic, a leading AI company, demonstrated that its models could potentially slash the computational effort needed to defeat a post-quantum signature algorithm by a factor of roughly 67 million. These combined risks have accelerated the urgency for quantum-resistant upgrades.

The XRP Ledger currently allows users to rotate their account keys without changing their account structure, supporting smoother adoption of new cryptographic protections in the future. Other blockchain projects, including Bitcoin and Ethereum, have also started developing protocols to address imminent quantum computing threats.
