A recently surfaced document, revealed by crypto researcher SMQKE, has reignited debate around Ripple’s role in global payments and its XRP Ledger (XRPL) platform. The document highlights how Ripple’s proprietary, patent-based intellectual property strategy could create significant barriers for competitors looking to build similar blockchain payment networks.

Barriers created by Ripple’s patent strategy

Ripple’s patent-focused approach has reinforced its control over its core transaction architecture, effectively safeguarding its payment system from imitation. As a result, other players in the industry encounter both legal and technical obstacles if they attempt to develop end-to-end solutions resembling Ripple’s models.

This development is central to a longstanding industry debate. While traditional payment networks like SWIFT remain crucial for international banking, they still struggle to resolve inefficiencies stemming from slow settlement and heavy reliance on intermediaries, especially in the final stages of cross-border transactions.

XRP Ledger brings speed and transparency to payments

Meanwhile, Ripple’s XRP Ledger emerges as an alternative designed for near-instant finality and direct value transfers. Its core advantage lies in eliminating multiple intermediary layers, thereby cutting friction in cross-border operations, reducing settlement timelines from days to seconds, and boosting transparency across liquidity flows.

While SWIFT often faces criticism within the financial sector for delays in the so-called “last mile” phase of payments, the Ripple network—powered by XRPL—offers instant settlement opportunities. The result is direct, rapid, and streamlined fund transfers.

“Ripple’s patent strategy is less about running parallel to existing financial infrastructure and more about integrating deeply with its core components, aiming in some cases to transform established systems.”

The role of XRPL and Ripple’s long-term vision

One key feature drawing attention is XRPL’s native token, XRP, which acts as a bridge among currencies. This enables quicker, more efficient conversions in international payment corridors. It means Ripple’s ambition is not just technological—it aims to drive fundamental changes within the global financial system.

The renewed focus on patents underlines Ripple’s aim to go beyond traditional blockchain services, positioning itself instead as an architect of real-time payment frameworks. By securing its intellectual property and expanding high-speed transfer capabilities, Ripple is cementing XRPL as a major contender for future financial infrastructure.

Through this, Ripple is setting sights beyond simply competing with legacy systems like SWIFT, instead working to develop a solution capable of integrating with them. This strategic perspective has fueled speculation that XRPL could eventually underpin the payment networks of banks and financial institutions worldwide.
