The Securities and Exchange Commission today charged Coinbase, Inc. for operating its crypto asset trading platform as an unregistered national securities exchange, broker, and clearing agency. The SEC also charged Coinbase for failing to register its crypto asset staking program’s offering and sale as a service. The SEC alleges that Coinbase intertwined the traditional services of an exchange, broker, and clearing agency without registering any of these functions as required by law.

SEC Chairman Gary Gensler, in his statement regarding the allegations, claimed that Coinbase openly violated securities laws, despite being subject to them.
