Solana account rent now refundable, minimum falls to 5,080 lamports per byte

In Brief

  • 🟠 Solana drops account rent minimum to 5,080 lamports per byte, making balances more accessible.

  • 💡 Refundable storage balance for $SOL depends on account data size and can be claimed after closing.

  • 🔒 Ongoing rent charges are disabled, so users no longer pay regular fees for keeping accounts.

Solana, a leading blockchain platform known for its high throughput, has clarified that account rent is a refundable storage requirement rather than a recurring fee. The rent mechanism, originally designed to encourage efficient data use on the network, has undergone several changes in recent years, including the disabling of ongoing rent collection.

Understanding account rent on Solana

Solana’s current model requires users to maintain a minimum balance of SOL – the blockchain’s native token – in accounts to make them rent-exempt. This means users do not pay monthly or recurring charges. Instead, SOL is temporarily locked as a storage balance and can be recovered if the account is closed.

The minimum balance depends on the size of data the account holds. Solana calculates the rent-exempt threshold using this formula: (128 + data size in bytes) × lamports per byte. Here, 128 bytes reflect fixed storage overhead, while ‘lamports’ are the smallest denomination of SOL.

Solana explained that the rent-exempt minimum stays tied up while an account exists, but users can sometimes withdraw excess SOL above the minimum without closing the account. Each account creation also requires a transaction fee, which is separate from the storage balance.

Account data size directly affects the minimum rent-exempt balance. Solana urges users to fetch the current required amount each time, since network parameters may change and previous minimums may no longer be accurate.

Recent change in rent-exempt minimum

On September 11, 2026, Solana reduced the rent-exempt minimum from 6,333 lamports per byte to 5,080 lamports per byte through the activation of SIMD-0437 step 2 on its mainnet-beta. This change marked a 27% decrease from the original rate of 6,960 lamports per byte. The Solana upgrade roadmap indicated plans for additional reductions coinciding with the expected Agave 4.4 release. However, as of November 2, 2026, those further steps remained pending.

Token account creation and refund process

When creating an associated token account, users must deposit a refundable storage minimum and pay a transaction fee. A standard Solana Program Library (SPL) token account requires 165 bytes. The payer funds both the required minimum balance and the transaction processing fee in separate amounts.

It is possible to recover the storage balance after an account is closed. Solana Foundation, the nonprofit overseeing network development, also highlighted the WithdrawExcessLamports instruction within its Token Program. This instruction allows for the withdrawal of SOL exceeding the rent-exempt minimum from a token account, a mint, or a multisig, without the need to close the account or alter token balances.

Mini dictionary: Solana Foundation is a non-profit organization founded to support the adoption, development, and security of the Solana blockchain ecosystem. Its responsibilities include funding projects, offering educational materials, and issuing official protocol guidance.

Solana Foundation’s instructions recommend using the getMinimumBalanceForRentExemption RPC method to determine the necessary storage deposit for accounts of a particular size, as rent parameters may evolve over time.

Important considerations for transactions

Before approving or interacting with any account-related transaction, Solana urges users to read the transaction details carefully. New account creation may combine a storage deposit with the transaction fee, potentially making the required SOL higher than the fee alone. Official guidance warns never to share seed phrases, even for “rent recovery” purposes, as this is a common method used in scams.

The rent requirement serves only as a technical measure to manage on-chain data storage and does not guarantee security for user funds. Account holders are advised to consult their wallet or application’s official documentation and exercise caution during all transactions.
