Early investment and integration with Ripple

Standard Chartered first collaborated with Ripple in 2015, when it began exploring blockchain-based solutions for faster cross-border payments. In 2016, the bank deepened the partnership by investing directly in Ripple and obtaining a seat as a board observer. This marked the start of a series of joint initiatives aimed at developing financial applications leveraging distributed ledger technology.

That same year, Standard Chartered used Ripple’s technology to process a cross-border business payment in less than 10 seconds, an early demonstration of blockchain’s potential to improve settlement speed. In 2017, Standard Chartered participated in live RippleNet payments involving India’s Axis Bank. The following year, the bank’s pilot program tested real-money settlement with Mitsubishi Corporation, MUFG and Krungsri.

Standard Chartered’s 2018 annual report identified Ripple as a technology provider for real-time, cross-border currency settlement, indicating how the relationship extended beyond investment toward operational adoption.

Standard Chartered has steadily expanded its collaboration with Ripple since 2015, moving from investment to live payment pilots and integration as a technology provider for rapid cross-border settlement.

Focus on institutional digital assets

X Finance Bull noted that Standard Chartered today positions itself as a “Super-Connector” in the institutional digital asset ecosystem. The bank aims to bridge traditional banking services with public and private blockchains, central bank digital currency networks and tokenized asset platforms. Its institutional strategy includes ongoing ties to Ripple, which is still listed as a strategic investment in Standard Chartered’s recent investor presentations.

SC Ventures, the innovation and venture capital arm of Standard Chartered, has played a role in broadening the bank’s digital infrastructure. SC Ventures helped launch Zodia Custody, a provider of institutional digital asset custody—supporting, among others, XRP. The venture arm also invested in Metaco, a digital asset custody company later acquired by Ripple for $250 million.

Both SC Ventures and Ripple have backed Keyrock, a liquidity provider focused on institutional digital asset markets.

XRP’s infrastructure role and evolving use cases

Alongside its partnerships, Ripple has steadily expanded its range of blockchain-enabled financial services, from payments and custody to stablecoins, prime brokerage, treasury management and asset tokenization. At the core of these operations is XRP, which remains the native digital asset of the XRP Ledger (XRPL).

According to information shared by X Finance Bull, XRP fulfills multiple functions within XRPL, including acting as a settlement asset, providing liquidity for foreign exchange transactions, facilitating bridge transfers, supporting lending flows and collecting transaction fees and reserves.

XRP’s integration into the XRP Ledger enables wide-ranging financial use cases for Ripple’s network, supporting settlement, liquidity and various institutional services.

Long-term outlook for Standard Chartered and Ripple

The ongoing relationship between Standard Chartered and Ripple positions both companies as key participants in the institutional adoption of tokenized money and on-chain settlement technologies. X Finance Bull emphasized that the partnership is not a recent development, but one built over years of experimentation, infrastructure development and strategic investment.

Industry observers point out that this deep, multi-year connection provides significant advantages for both Standard Chartered and Ripple as blockchain-driven financial services continue to gain traction in global markets.
