Strategy, a company renowned for its large-scale Bitcoin holdings, has released a new institutional Bitcoin guide that goes well beyond simply accumulating BTC as a balance sheet asset. The 21-page document, updated on September 7, positions Bitcoin not just as a scarce commodity, but as the backbone for an emerging digital capital market.

Bitcoin as the foundation of a digital financial system

The guide outlines a framework in which Bitcoin forms the reserve base of a multi-layered financial architecture. According to the document, the system builds upwards from Bitcoin into five additional layers: Digital Capital, Digital Equity, Digital Credit, Digital Debt, Digital Derivatives, and finally, Digital Money. Each layer comprises financial instruments with varying risk and return characteristics, all ultimately grounded in the stability of Bitcoin as a core asset.

This vision expands significantly on the traditional scarcity-focused narrative of Bitcoin, promoting the cryptocurrency as the foundation for engineering new equity, credit, and derivative products within a digital marketplace.

Mini dictionary: Strategy is a corporate entity widely followed within the cryptocurrency sector for its substantial investments in Bitcoin and its research into digital asset strategies.

Balance sheet developments and treasury strategy

The timing of the guide’s release aligns with notable changes in Strategy’s own approach. As of September 7, the company reported holding 845,050 BTC, cumulatively purchased for $63.73 billion at an average cost of $75,412 per coin. In recent weeks, however, the company did not increase its Bitcoin position. Instead, after adding 4,603 BTC in late August, Strategy diverted $176.3 million towards repurchasing preferred stock and expanded its buyback authorization for digital-credit securities to $2 billion.

This shift marks a move away from the company’s earlier practice of consistently deploying every available dollar into BTC accumulation. Throughout the summer, Strategy’s partial sales of BTC also signaled that its treasury approach had become more dynamic, actively balancing digital asset holdings with broader capital management strategies.

Bitcoin market dynamics and ETFs

According to Strategy’s snapshot dated September 4, Bitcoin’s price stood at $79,809. The data highlighted a 30-day average daily trading volume of $28.3 billion, $96 billion in open interest within derivative markets, and roughly 1.27 million BTC held by exchange-traded funds (ETFs).

The accumulation of Bitcoin by ETFs has now surpassed Strategy’s own holdings by more than 400,000 BTC, underscoring major institutional adoption of the cryptocurrency as a reserve asset.

Risks and the evolving investment narrative

The guide provides specific cautions for investors. Over a one-year period ending September 4, Bitcoin registered a negative return of 28.3%, though its 10-year annualized return maintained a strong 62.8%. Strategy emphasizes that Bitcoin produces no contractual cash flow, does not adhere to traditional valuation anchors, and remains subject to significant price downturns.

The company directly acknowledges its economic interests in Bitcoin adoption. It informs readers of potential conflicts, given Strategy’s BTC treasury and its securities linked to Bitcoin’s value.

Strategy presents Bitcoin not only as a scarce asset but as collateral that could support a sophisticated financial system, evolving alongside the deepening financial infrastructure being built around it.

While the document does not serve as an independent valuation model, it offers a blueprint for how Bitcoin’s role could expand within the global financial system, transitioning from simple store of value to a critical component in digital capital formation.
