Today, the US DOJ announced the arrest of two brothers for a theft on the Ethereum network that took 12 seconds. ANTON PERAIRE-BUENO and JAMES PERAIRE-BUENO were arrested yesterday in Boston, Massachusetts, and New York, New York, respectively. US Attorney Damian Williams said;
“Today, my Office charged two brothers – Anton Peraire-Bueno and James Peraire-Bueno – with wire fraud, wire fraud conspiracy, and money laundering conspiracy stemming from their scheme to exploit the Ethereum blockchain and obtain approximately $25 million worth of cryptocurrency.”
Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco said;
“As alleged in today’s indictment, the Peraire-Bueno brothers executed a technologically sophisticated, cutting-edge scheme that stole $25 million from Ethereum in seconds. Unfortunately for the defendants, the crimes they are accused of committing were not impossible to solve for the DOJ prosecutors and IRS agents who cracked this first-of-its-kind bank fraud and money laundering scheme. As cryptocurrency markets continue to evolve, the Department will continue to root out fraud, support victims, and restore confidence in these markets.”
