US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) accumulated 79,800 BTC, valued at approximately $6.2 billion, during the third quarter of 2026, according to 21Shares’ latest Bitcoin Market Report. This influx marks a significant shift after the same funds reported $4.8 billion in net outflows in the previous quarter.
US Spot Bitcoin ETFs Lead Q3 Institutional Demand
The Q3 report from 21Shares highlights that the US spot Bitcoin ETF sector acquired nearly double the newly mined supply for the quarter. While just 41,300 BTC, worth around $2.9 billion, entered the market through mining, ETF demand absorbed substantially more, reinforcing their position as a dominant institutional buyer.
ETF buying patterns were notably uneven. According to the data, two periods—August 17 to 27 and September 21 to 25—accounted for 91% of total Bitcoin-denominated inflows to these funds. The majority of institutional buying arrived in short bursts rather than being distributed evenly throughout the quarter. Trading ledgers also show significant volatility, with weeks of large IBIT-led inflows sometimes immediately followed by episodes of sharp outflows.
The rise in ETF demand coincided with Bitcoin’s price climbing 42.7% through Q3, closing September at $83,570.

Public Bitcoin Treasuries Scale Back Purchases
In contrast to the ETF surge, public Bitcoin treasury companies significantly curtailed their acquisition activity in Q3. Their combined purchases dropped from $7.1 billion in the previous quarter to about $1 billion.
Strategy, one of the prominent public Bitcoin holders, added only 1,700 BTC worth approximately $240 million during the quarter, and its disclosures revealed $349 million in sales over July and August. The major withdrawals by corporate treasuries occurred as ETF investment activity rebounded, suggesting a shift in the balance of institutional demand.
Despite reduced buying by corporate treasuries, the combined purchases from US spot ETFs and public treasury companies totaled nearly $7.2 billion in Q3, which represented around 2.4 times the value of newly mined Bitcoin. This was a stark increase from Q2, when combined buys covered just 0.8 times new issuance, but almost all of the Q3 momentum originated from ETFs.
US spot Bitcoin ETFs absorbed nearly twice the new supply in Q3 2026, marking a reversal from the previous quarter’s significant net outflows and establishing ETFs as the main institutional buyers while treasury purchases faded.
Long-Term Bitcoin Holders Exit Positions During Rally
Despite strong ETF inflows, selling pressure remained. Blockchain analytics firm Glassnode reported that long-term holders—which refers to wallets holding Bitcoin for over 155 days—reduced their total balances by 248,000 BTC in Q3, or about $17.4 billion in value. This amount was nearly three times the Bitcoin acquired by ETFs during the same period.
These long-term investors had previously added roughly $31 billion worth of Bitcoin between November 2025 and June 2026 following a sharp market decline in October 2025. Meanwhile, ETFs posted outflows of $7.6 billion through that accumulation phase. The third quarter rally provided an opportunity for these holders to take profits, resulting in $9.3 billion in net realized gains for Q3, according to Glassnode—the first quarterly net gain recorded in 2026. Still, when measured across both Q2 and Q3, total realized losses remained at $12.3 billion due to the first half’s steep outflows.
With ETF inflows heavily clustered in late August and late September and long-term holders taking profits into strength, the future direction of institutional demand remains in focus. Analysts now watch whether upcoming quarters will see similar spikes in ETF demand and whether treasury or holder supply will set further caps on potential price increases.

Long-term investor selling outpaced ETF buying, with holders reducing balances by a factor of three compared to new ETF inflows during the price rally, raising questions about the sustainability of further gains.
