Bitcoin marked its 17th year in the cryptocurrency landscape this week, reigniting debate about whether its longevity has become more of a liability than an asset. Venture capitalist Jason Calacanis likened Bitcoin to outdated media formats, describing it as “the CD in the age of Spotify” and “the DVD in the age of Netflix,” even as Bitcoin’s price moved above $80,000 on Friday.
Debate over innovation and utility
Calacanis argued that Bitcoin no longer holds the position of the most sophisticated blockchain in areas such as payments, smart contracts, or applications. According to him, the network’s persistence is tied more to nostalgia and supporter loyalty than cutting-edge technology. He pointed out that while newer blockchains offer enhanced features and greater flexibility, Bitcoin remains rooted in a relatively simple design.
In response, the Strategy chairman emphasized Bitcoin’s substantial market value, currently approximately $1.6 trillion, and its core role as “digital capital.” He described Bitcoin as primarily an asset intended to store and preserve wealth, rather than serve as an all-purpose blockchain platform advancing with each technological trend.
Bitcoin distinguishes itself with a fixed supply of 21 million coins and monetary rules that are intentionally hard to change, making it less adaptable but highly predictable in function.
Newer blockchain networks can indeed process larger transaction volumes and enable robust smart contract capabilities. However, direct comparisons to now-obsolete consumer technology assume that blockchain value is determined solely by feature sets and speed.
Core attributes and resistance to change
Bitcoin’s appeal among its adherents comes largely from its stability and resistance to rapid changes. While this inflexibility can be seen as a weakness compared to more agile competitors, many investors consider the predictable monetary policy a strength. Debates within the Bitcoin community, such as tensions surrounding BIP-110, highlight ongoing disagreements about whether the protocol should evolve for broader utility or remain narrowly focused on monetary functions.
To surpass Bitcoin’s dominant role in the digital asset ecosystem, a rival network would need to do more than simply process transactions faster or support advanced applications. Matching Bitcoin’s unique combination of decentralization, strict supply limits, security, ample liquidity, worldwide user recognition, and a vast network of holders presents a far greater challenge.

Institutional interest in Bitcoin continues to grow, further complicating the argument that it is “obsolete.” Michael Saylor, chairman of Strategy, recently stated that Bitcoin’s expansion into traditional banking could progress through custody and lending channels, even if new US crypto regulations stall. Strategy, known for its substantial corporate Bitcoin holdings, has been at the forefront of promoting institutional adoption in the sector.
Technological obsolescence is typically associated with the introduction of superior replacements, but Bitcoin’s model raises the question of whether doing less is sometimes a feature, not a flaw. For many, Bitcoin’s slow evolution and consistent policy are integral to its value proposition.
Rather than racing to add features, Bitcoin’s long-term value experiment is built on scarcity, gradual change, and enduring predictability.
