What is REN Coin?

REN Coin is the native token of the REN project, serving as a bond for nodes known as Darknodes that power the RenVM. REN aims to enhance the interoperability and accessibility of decentralized finance (DeFi) by removing liquidity barriers between blockchains.

Formerly known as Republic Protocol, Ren completed its $34 million ICO in 2018 and launched its virtual machine mainnet, RenVM, in May 2020.

What is REN?

REN is a token used as a bond to operate a Darknode in the sMPC network (RenVM). The decentralized Darknode network is permissionless, but a bond of 100,000 REN coins is required to register and operate a Darknode, preventing the mass creation of malicious Darknodes.

Users must acquire 100,000 REN for each registered darknode and be prepared to bond it to an Ethereum smart contract. This amount is refunded upon deregistration. Darknode operators earn rewards in BTC, ETH, ZEC, DAI, and ERC-20 tokens for their contributions to the network.

Additionally, RenVM is a virtual machine protocol enhancing interoperability for decentralized applications, enabling cross-chain lending, swapping, collateralization, and more.

RenVM provides scalable interoperability solutions and is recognized as the only solution that allows secret computations across multiple inputs and parties. Essentially, RenVM is a network that enables developers to add cross-chain functionality to DeFi applications.

RenVM is supported by a network of machines called Darknodes, earning rewards for contributing processing power and storage space. RenVM is a network supported by decentralized virtual machines, replicated across thousands of machines collaborating to contribute network bandwidth, computing power, and storage capacity. These machines, known as Darknodes, share in the volume processed through RenVM.

Additionally, RenVM introduces interoperability in DeFi by enabling permissionless value exchange between blockchains, thereby directly enhancing the usability of DeFi by adding more liquid assets to the Ethereum ecosystem. Independent of the DeFi application, RenVM provides a seamless and decentralized cross-chain user experience for the first time.
