Winklevoss Asset Services has submitted a registration statement to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for an exchange-traded fund (ETF) focused on tracking the price of Zcash (ZEC).
ETF Structure and Features
The proposed ETF, which seeks to list its shares on the Nasdaq Stock Market with the ticker symbol WINK, would directly hold ZEC rather than using leverage or derivatives to achieve its investment goal. The filing specifies that Winklevoss Asset Services will sponsor the ETF, while Gemini Trust Company, a Winklevoss affiliate, will provide custody for the ZEC assets.
According to the statement, the ETF intends to charge an annual sponsor fee of 0.25%. This fee structure sets it apart from some competitors in the crypto ETF sector. Notably, Winklevoss Capital Fund, via its affiliated entities, has shown interest in purchasing up to $100 million in ETF shares. However, this indication of interest carries no binding obligation, and final investment levels remain subject to change.
Existing Competition and Market Context
If approved, the Winklevoss Zcash ETF would enter a market where Grayscale’s Zcash Trust (ZCSH) already operates. Grayscale’s ZCSH has recently announced a 3-for-1 share split, highlighting the growing attention on privacy-focused cryptocurrency exposure within the US institutional market.
Zcash has drawn significant investor interest over the past year. ZEC’s price climbed more than 735% during this period, lifting its total market capitalization to approximately $23 billion, as reported by CoinGecko. With a trading price around $1,354 on Tuesday, Zcash now ranks as the 10th-largest cryptocurrency by market value.
Meme Tokens and Investor Behavior
As market participants closely examine privacy coins like ZEC, attention has also intensified around the meme token segment, where internet-driven trends can swiftly attract substantial capital flows. Technical analysts emphasize the importance of monitoring both price action and investor timing to navigate this rapidly evolving landscape.
Fomo App data recently showcased a notable example: an investor transformed a $99 position in the meme token “Niu Lai” into approximately $370,000 within days. This underscores the speed and unpredictability of meme token trading. Investors interested in tracking emerging tokens and market movements can access Fomo App’s integrated platform, which combines token discovery, real-time trading, social feeds, investor leaderboards, and trade alert features.
Winklevoss Capital Fund, through its affiliated entities, has expressed a nonbinding interest in acquiring up to $100 million in shares of the proposed ETF, highlighting expectations of robust demand for a spot Zcash investment vehicle.
The filing has set the stage for further developments as the SEC reviews whether to approve the Winklevoss-backed Zcash ETF for listing on Nasdaq.
