Capital continues to leave altcoins and concentrate in Bitcoin, as weakening spot ETF demand and persistent selling pressure weigh on the broader cryptocurrency market. Market maker Wintermute and trading platform Phemex reported that in the current climate, altcoin holders cannot expect a sustained uptrend unless Bitcoin takes the lead with a decisive price move.

Bitcoin’s key support and ETF outflows

Wintermute identified $82,500 as a critical short-term support for Bitcoin, a level that recently shifted from resistance to a price point that bulls are working to defend after Bitcoin experienced limited losses during the week. The firm outlined two possible scenarios for the price trajectory: either Bitcoin breaks through $87,000 for further upside, or it slips below $82,500, which could bring a retest of the $70,000 region.

Bitcoins’s resilience was tested after it dropped to $80,400, attributed to $679 million in net outflows from spot ETF products. However, buyers managed to stabilize prices. While comparing Bitcoin to other risk assets, Wintermute observed that Bitcoin is “holding up better than the macro tape would suggest,” citing the cryptocurrency’s 3.5-point lead over the Nasdaq index over the same period.

Macro pressures weigh on risk assets

Broader market stress has roots in recent macroeconomic data, with US inflation hitting 3.7%. The core inflation rate climbed by 0.3%, reflecting the pass-through effect of higher energy prices. Traditional financial markets reacted promptly, with the Nasdaq dropping 5.5%, Brent crude oil advancing 5%, and US government bond yields climbing by 2.65% as investors sought safer assets. Wintermute has emphasized that the return of tighter correlation between conventional markets and crypto has amplified volatility in digital assets.

In the past 24 hours, Bitcoin fell by over 2%, currently trading near $81,726. Ether dropped nearly 3% and now stands at $2,401. The overall crypto market capitalization fell by 2% in the last day, reaching $2.84 trillion.

Altcoins underperform as funds concentrate in majors

The wider market sell-off has especially impacted altcoins, whose total capitalization dropped 5.69% over the past week. Wintermute’s desk noted that, aside from a small number of high-quality large-cap tokens, the bulk of altcoin flows have turned negative. Traders are increasingly pulling out of these assets and reallocating to Bitcoin and Ether. According to Wintermute, “the risk/reward ratio favors majors over altcoins now, and Bitcoin needs to be up for altcoins to have any hope of resuming a rally.”

Wintermute stated that altcoin profits are unlikely unless Bitcoin resumes its upward trajectory, highlighting that capital is currently flowing one-way toward the largest cryptocurrencies.

Data from Phemex shows Bitcoin’s dominance surged to 60% as altcoins lagged. The turmoil triggered liquidations, including a large investor forced to sell after losing 121.33 BTC, valued at about $9.9 million. Asian equities also dropped sharply, while Chinese stock markets slipped into bear territory.

With technical patterns reflecting indecision and money exiting riskier tokens, market observers are watching not just price action, but also behavioral indicators across sectors. In the meme token space, rapid shifts in sentiment can turn trends into large gains within days. Fomo App data highlighted one example in which a trader turned a $99 investment in “Niu Lai” into nearly $370,000. In this environment, monitoring both price movements and investor actions has become essential. The Fomo App platform combines token discovery with social feeds, rankings, and trade alerts to help keep up with shifting dynamics in meme tokens and altcoins.

Upcoming FOMC meeting could trigger breakout

Wintermute anticipates that the current tight trading range will not persist given the upcoming economic events. The firm highlighted the October 28 FOMC meeting as a likely catalyst for the next significant price move in crypto markets, noting that outcomes could be volatile regardless of direction.

A more hawkish stance from the Federal Reserve may place additional downward pressure on both the Nasdaq and Bitcoin. In contrast, a dovish approach supported by strong corporate earnings could provide momentum for a bullish breakout.
