Worldcoin (WLD) has made a rapid entry into the cryptocurrency industry. The dystopian cryptocurrency and blockchain project, founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, aims to create a unique identity for everyone by scanning their retinas. Of course, this aspect and feature has drawn criticism from many. Kenya, on the other hand, is associated with an interesting news regarding this.
Worldcoin Raided in Kenya!
Worldcoin’s warehouse in Nairobi, Kenya was raided by the police. Armed forces entered the warehouse with a search warrant and seized important documents and machines. According to the local media source KahawuTangu, the situation unfolded as follows:
“Officials and authorities accompanied by armed personnel from various institutions headed to the offices on Mombasa Road and began the search. The search, which started on Saturday, ended on Sunday, and numerous documents and machines were confiscated from the company.”
Data Privacy Concerns Regarding WLD
Local news sources report that the initial search warrant was requested by the Data Protection Unit and the police subsequently got involved. It was thought that the project implemented by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman could potentially misuse or leak the retina samples collected worldwide. However, it is unknown whether this concern was the main reason that prompted the Kenyan authorities to take action.
Worldcoin’s actions had been declared illegal and halted by the Kenyan Ministry of Interior a week prior.
Kenyan officials claim that Tools for Humanity, the parent company of Worldcoin, did not fully disclose its intentions when applying for registration, which led to increased pressure. The impact of this recent raid on the Worldcoin team remains unknown.
Meanwhile, the WLD price has experienced positive development in the past 24 hours. WLD Coin has gained a 1.2% increase in the last 24 hours, reaching $2.04. With a total market value of $245 million, WLD faces challenges in Europe and other countries, but no raids like Kenya have been witnessed. This raid could potentially inspire other countries as well.
