The XRP Ledger Foundation has publicly addressed concerns after a severe security flaw was discovered that could have allowed attackers to mint trillions of unauthorized XRP, threatening the entire market capitalization of $94 billion.
Foundation Responds to Vulnerability Concerns
In a statement, the foundation clarified that its decision to bypass the standard amendment procedure for protocol changes was due to the extraordinary nature of the threat. This vulnerability, found in the core payment engine of the XRP Ledger, bypassed the fixed supply cap and could have enabled the creation of around 18.45 trillion new XRP in a single transaction. Security firm Veria Labs traced the bug back to 2015 and highlighted its potential danger—approximately 180 times the actual circulating supply.
No unauthorized tokens were minted or circulated, according to the foundation. All XRP holdings remain openly accessible on the public ledger, making any possible unauthorized minting immediately visible to the community. The foundation emphasized that the exploit was never observed on the live network.
Ongoing monitoring of the network supply forms a routine part of ledger operations. Community members consistently verify supply data to ensure integrity across the system.
The foundation clarified that if any new XRP had been minted due to the vulnerability, it would have been immediately apparent in the publicly accessible XRP Ledger, as all balances and supply are visible and regularly verified by network participants.
Researchers from Veria Labs discovered the threat and communicated their findings, prompting coordination among the foundation, RippleX, core developers, and a wide group of trusted validators to patch the bug quickly.
Rapid Emergency Response
Ordinarily, protocol changes on the XRP Ledger require two consecutive weeks of over 80% approval from trusted validators before being implemented. The foundation explained that adhering to such a timeline would have left the vulnerability exposed for too long, giving adversaries potential weeks to exploit it.
Given the pace at which vulnerabilities can be found and exploited through modern technologies, including artificial intelligence, the decision was made to distribute a patched software update immediately. On September 25, validators received the update, with public binaries released simultaneously.
The XRP Ledger Foundation emphasized that no single entity can force software updates across the network; each participant independently decides whether to install patches.
By acting swiftly, the coordinated response aimed to close the security gap before any malicious actor could act.
Context in Crypto Security and Meme Token Trends
The incident has highlighted the challenges blockchain projects face in rapidly mitigating security risks. Monitoring critical metrics, including network supply, validator activity, and technical trends, remains increasingly important as market conditions and technologies evolve.
Within the fast-moving meme token market, for example, changes can funnel millions of dollars in interest in a matter of days. Data from Fomo App shows how a single “Niu Lai” trade converted $99 into about $370,000, underscoring the necessity of tracking both price movements and the timing and token choices of investors. Fomo App aggregates token discovery and trading on one platform, featuring investor rankings, trade alerts, and social feeds, enabling participants to follow trends in meme tokens and investor behavior in real time.
