A recently discovered vulnerability in the XRP Ledger raised community concerns about the potential for bypassing the network’s strict supply cap and generating new XRP tokens. Security researchers Cayden Liao and Veria AI identified the flaw, prompting a swift response from network developers with the release of software version 3.4.1 to resolve the issue.

XRP supply confirmed intact

The XRP Ledger Foundation, a nonprofit supporting the ongoing development and adoption of the XRP Ledger, addressed public concerns by confirming the circulating supply was not compromised at any stage. The network operates with an initial fixed supply of 100 billion XRP and is designed to block any transaction that would create additional tokens.

The vulnerability, however, revealed a theoretical method whereby an attacker could bypass this restriction. The Foundation clarified that the 3.4.1 software patch eliminated the risk without introducing new XRP into circulation. They emphasized the transparency of the blockchain, allowing any member of the public to independently verify token balances and transactions.

Foundation representatives reported that network monitoring remains continuous, with internal and external checks confirming the entire XRP supply history is intact. Current estimates place the existing XRP supply at approximately 99.986 billion, a figure gradually reduced by transaction fees that are permanently destroyed with each transfer.

The XRP Ledger Foundation confirmed no new XRP tokens have been created and assured that the integrity of the network’s fixed supply is preserved following the vulnerability patch.

Enhanced security measures planned

The Foundation also highlighted the complexity that allowed the bug to go undetected for an extended period. Triggering the issue required highly specific and numerous operations, making accidental activation unlikely during routine network use.

Rising advancements in artificial intelligence, the Foundation noted, may speed up both the detection of vulnerabilities by researchers and their exploitation by malicious actors. The organization is preparing to collaborate with RippleX—the developer platform for the XRP Ledger—and the broader XRPL community to further strengthen the network.

Planned initiatives include increasing the reliance on formal verification procedures, adopting AI-driven adversarial testing, enhancing partnerships with security experts, and expanding the existing bug bounty program. These steps aim to enhance proactive detection and mitigation of future weaknesses.

Mini dictionary: Formal verification is a process that uses mathematical proofs to validate the correctness of software code, ensuring vulnerabilities and errors are minimized before deployment in critical systems like blockchain networks.

The Foundation is increasing the use of advanced security tools and plans to update the community as additional safeguards are implemented.

Direct deployment of patch explained

Amid discussion over the bug fix process, the Foundation clarified its decision to release the patch directly rather than waiting for the usual amendment procedure. Normally, amendments on the XRP Ledger go through a public voting process, which extends over several weeks to achieve validator consensus. Revealing vulnerability details before activating the fix could have enabled potential attacks.

To reduce risk, a social consensus emerged among the Foundation, RippleX, software developers, and validators to deploy the patch immediately while minimizing disruption to node operators. Although no single institution could enforce the change alone, validators and node operators collectively determined software adoption.

After more than 80% of validators backed the 3.4.1 release for two weeks, it became the new standard via the traditional amendment route. The Foundation credited responsible disclosure by Cayden Liao and Veria AI, as well as contributions from core developers and validators, for the effective and timely resolution of the incident. This collaborative approach, the Foundation maintained, reflects the decentralized nature of the XRP Ledger’s governance.
