XRP Ledger implements on-chain KYC controls via three new compliance amendments

In Brief

  • 🟠 KYC controls are now embedded in the $XRP Ledger with three live compliance amendments.

  • 🟣 New features let issuers grant credentials and restrict trading to verified domains.

  • 🔵 Permissioned DEX and domain upgrades support institutional and regulated finance use cases.

  • 🟢 XRP remains vital for fees, reserves, and bridging assets on the upgraded ledger.

Investor and Web3 specialist Jake Claver has brought attention to a set of recent upgrades on the XRP Ledger that introduce compliance mechanisms directly at the protocol level. These changes incorporate credential checks, permissioned trading, and new decentralized exchange (DEX) functionality designed to enforce eligibility requirements within the network itself.

Mainnet compliance controls activated

Claver noted that these compliance tools—Credentials, Permissioned Domains, and Permissioned DEX—are currently live on the XRP Ledger mainnet, though he suggested the developments have seen limited public discussion. He described the suite of upgrades as an embedded compliance layer that aligns with the growing demand for regulated blockchain infrastructure.

He specified that the Credentials amendment became active on September 4, 2025, with Permissioned Domains following on February 4, 2026, and Permissioned DEX going live on February 18, 2026. According to Claver, these activation dates align with ledger close times, providing users the ability to independently verify the upgrades on-chain.

Each amendment required the backing of at least 80% of trusted validators—specifically, 28 out of 35—for two consecutive weeks before implementation. This process underscores how protocol-level changes undergo broad community oversight on the XRP Ledger, a decentralized blockchain network focused on fast, low-cost value transfers.

Claver wrote on X that the compliance checks now occur directly on-chain. If an account does not have the necessary credentials, a transaction attempting to match an order on the DEX will fail at the protocol layer.

KYC is now part of the XRP Ledger itself; the protocol checks your credential before your order matches, and if you don’t hold one the transaction fails. Three amendments did it and a lot of people missed it. All live on mainnet, all verifiable on the ripple:native ledger.

The Credentials feature allows authorized issuers—such as banks, KYC providers, fund administrators, and brokers—to place a signed attestation on-chain, vouching for the account’s compliance. Private details remain off-chain, but credential status, expiration, and revocation can be managed and verified within the system.

Mini dictionary: XRP Ledger (XRPL): A decentralized, public blockchain designed for fast and affordable digital asset transfers, maintained by a distributed network of validators.

Upgrades for permissioned domains and trading

The Permissioned Domains amendment builds on credentials by enabling users to define domains that recognize certain credentials. Domains can require a specific credential or accept from a list. Any transaction that does not meet the domain’s requirements will fail, blocking unauthorized access to restricted trading environments.

Permissioned DEX further extends compliance by allowing liquidity pools and orders to be tied to a domain ID. Offers associated with a domain execute only against others within the same domain, effectively segmenting DEX activity according to regulatory requirements or access restrictions.

Claver pointed out that if a credential expires or is revoked, offers linked to that credential become automatically invalid. Restored credentials can reactivate compliant offers, and hybrid solutions are available that allow offers to operate between permissioned and open liquidity pools.

Permissioned trading enables environments where only eligible participants can interact, and inactive or revoked credentials instantly halt related offers, supporting institutional or regulated usages.

XRP utility reinforced by compliance upgrades

Claver said these compliance-oriented upgrades do not change the core transactional role of XRP on the ledger. XRP remains necessary to pay network fees, which are permanently destroyed after each transaction, while all ledger objects require XRP reserves. This mechanism incentivizes use of the token as the ledger becomes more active.

He highlighted XRPL’s auto-bridging feature, which selects the most cost-efficient paths for asset transfers, including within permissioned domains. Auto-bridging positions XRP as an intermediary asset for transfers between other tokens, particularly when regulatory compliance is required.

According to Claver, the integration of compliance controls with tokenization, orderbook systems, and planned lending functionality positions the XRP Ledger as a foundation for regulated blockchain finance. He referenced Ripple’s earlier comments regarding identity and custody as critical factors for institutional adoption, and suggested that these protocol-level features directly address those needs.

Ripple is both a payments technology company and a principal developer of the XRP Ledger, focusing on advancing global value exchange and supporting adoption of digital assets within regulated environments.
