Cross-border payments have long been identified as a key area where blockchain technology could improve speed and transparency. XRPL validator Vet, an independent participant responsible for confirming transactions on the XRP Ledger, recently provided an update on his own experience with international bank transfers after documenting a prolonged delay in moving funds from Europe to the United States.

Delayed Bank Transfer Illustrates Legacy System Flaws

Vet initially shared on X that he had sent a euro wire payment intended for receipt in US dollars. However, several days passed without the funds reaching their US destination, with the payment reportedly stuck at an intermediary bank involved in the process. During this period, Vet initiated a SWIFT trace in order to determine where the transfer had stalled. He suspected the delay originated from a currency conversion queue, a common issue with traditional international wires.

Vet contrasted his experience with the capabilities of the XRP Ledger’s on-chain decentralized exchange, noting that a EUR/USD transaction on the XRP Ledger can be settled within seconds, with all details instantly available for verification by any participant—unlike the opaque processes of legacy banking.

He emphasized that blockchain-based payment solutions address fundamental inefficiencies in legacy cross-border banking, making real-time settlement and transparency possible for users worldwide.

Final Settlement and Ongoing Infrastructure Concerns

After days of uncertainty, Vet reported that the delayed payment had finally arrived at its intended US recipient. He explained that the bank handling the transfer had to resubmit the transaction, and that the SWIFT trace did not reveal the exact point at which the payment got stuck.

According to Vet, it is likely that an intermediary bank intervened, rerouting the transaction by amending settlement instructions and sending it through a different institution so the payment could be completed. While the funds ultimately reached their destination, Vet pointed out that the need for manual troubleshooting exposed logistical gaps in conventional banking processes, particularly where multiple parties are involved.

He further commented that delays caused by intermediary banks increase customer stress due to the inability to track funds in real time, in sharp contrast to blockchain-based alternatives that offer immediate visibility into transaction status.

Vet also responded to critics who argued that XRP’s price performance does not justify its underlying value. He dismissed this perspective, stating that the practical utility of the network and the underlying technology should be regarded independently from short-term market volatility.

Despite the successful settlement, Vet stressed that the technical strengths and use cases of blockchain infrastructure are not reflected solely in market price. He recommended that market skeptics explore the operational benefits of blockchain firsthand.

Blockchain Technology’s Role in Financial Evolution

Looking beyond his specific payment issue, Vet reiterated his long-term conviction that blockchain technology will drive significant improvements across the financial sector. He stated that rapid settlement, transparent tracking, and a reduced reliance on intermediaries will become ever-more valuable as global payment systems advance.

He encouraged others to establish their own investment strategies based on an understanding of these long-term benefits, rather than focusing exclusively on short-term asset prices.

The episode with the delayed payment ultimately underlines Vet’s view that, while traditional banking can complete cross-border transfers, it often remains slow and opaque. In comparison, payment networks built on the XRP Ledger are designed to resolve many of the bottlenecks still present in legacy infrastructure.

Mini dictionary: XRPL validator, an independent entity that maintains the XRP Ledger by verifying and approving transactions, contributing to the ledger’s consensus and overall network health.
