Zcash NU7 upgrade cuts block target to 25 seconds, introduces fee reserve

In Brief

  • 🚨 Zcash activates NU7 upgrade, setting a 25-second block target and redirecting 60% of fees to a reserve.

  • ⚡ The network now aims for faster transactions, but block times can vary as difficulty adjusts.

  • 📉 More than 12,000 ZEC in the Sprout pool became unspendable with the new upgrade in $ZEC.

Zcash has completed its NU7 network upgrade, activating key changes designed to improve transaction speed and sustainability for the privacy-focused blockchain. The upgrade went live on the mainnet at block 3,543,405, mined at 02:34 UTC on November 6, 2026, and brings a significant shift in how blocks are produced and how transaction fees are allocated across the network.

Block interval cut to 25 seconds

The NU7 protocol upgrade reduces the target block interval from the previous 75 seconds to 25 seconds, tripling the potential transaction frequency on the Zcash network. This adjustment aims to support faster and more scalable payment processing, but the network’s confirmation times can still fluctuate based on mining difficulty.

Initial post-upgrade data from CoinDesk showed that the first 225 blocks averaged about 39 seconds per block, reflecting ongoing adjustment in mining difficulty. The 25-second interval serves as a guideline, rather than an absolute, for block creation timing.

Early block times after the NU7 upgrade averaged approximately 39 seconds as difficulty recalibrated, rather than meeting the 25-second target instantly.

The Zcash Foundation stressed that the change in target block speed does not impact the amount of ZEC produced daily. Per-block rewards are now one-third of their previous value, which maintains the supply schedule and four-year halving cycle with the total supply fixed at 21 million ZEC.

Fee reserve and new funding mechanism

A centerpiece of the NU7 upgrade is the introduction of the Network Sustainability Mechanism (NSM). Under this mechanism, 60% of all transaction fees collected in each block are now allocated to a network reserve, while 40% remain with miners.

The Foundation reported that the first planned reserve reissuance will be at block 8,939,664, estimated for 2031, marking the next phase of network funding for development or security programs.

Protocol changes and impacts on users

Alongside changes to block timing and fees, NU7 sets new limits on shielded transaction throughput, which the Foundation estimates could double Orchard shielded capacity to approximately 6.6 transactions per second while reducing light-wallet bandwidth needs by about 37% during high-activity periods.

NU7 invalidates version 4 transactions, ending support for Zcash’s Sprout pool, which previously relied on this format. According to Unchained Crypto, around 12,224 ZEC in the Sprout pool became unspendable due to this change, a move affecting legacy users but intended to streamline network maintenance and privacy technology.

With version 4 transactions now disabled, remaining Sprout pool ZEC became frozen, directly impacting funds still held under legacy privacy technology.

The coinholder vote in September 2026 revealed overwhelming consensus among participating ZEC for fast block targets and continued halving events. However, the process left some architectural preferences unresolved, as different stakeholders had backed alternate designs.

Market and community reaction

The immediate effect of the upgrade on ZEC’s price remains unclear, as market data on the day noted declines for both Bitcoin and Ether. At 08:13 UTC on November 6, Bitcoin traded at $75,514, down 6.29% in 24 hours, while Ether stood at $2,224.19, down 8.23%. The Crypto Fear & Greed Index was at 28, in the “Fear” range, providing context for sentiment around major coins at the time of activation.

Jason McGee of Shielded Labs acknowledged that while the outcome respected the community’s vote, it did not mirror every original design preference expressed by all stakeholders.

Looking ahead, analysts are watching how block intervals adjust now that mining difficulty can better respond to the faster targets. Ongoing monitoring will also focus on real-world transaction throughput, network stability, and how effectively the NSM sustains Zcash development and operations in the future.
