A Bitcoin address inactive for over 14 years abruptly transferred its entire balance of 49.97 BTC this week, raising questions among market observers. The transfer occurred at block 961331, bringing one of Bitcoin’s oldest wallets back into the spotlight.

Whale wakes after 14 years

Blockchain data indicates that the address, which starts with “1EBz,” first received the Bitcoin on July 16, 2011, when the price of BTC was trading below $15. At the time, the investment totaled around $500, based on an average acquisition price of just $10 per coin.

On August 6, 2026, at 20:14 UTC, the original wallet moved its entire balance in a single transaction to a new address. Given Bitcoin’s current value of approximately $65,000, the holdings are now worth $3.23 million—a staggering 634,347% increase in value over 15 years.

Movements of such old funds are uncommon, as most early participants in Bitcoin either spent, lost, or misplaced access to their wallets. These dormant addresses, sometimes referred to as “Satoshi-era” wallets, periodically reactivate and often draw significant attention within the crypto community.

Funds headed to institutional venue

Data from Arkham Intelligence shows that the destination wallet sent funds onward to an address associated with FalconX, a prominent crypto prime broker serving institutional clients and trading firms. FalconX does not cater to retail customers, suggesting the transaction’s scale and purpose may align with institutional activity.

While this transfer does not necessarily confirm a sale, it may indicate preparations for trading, collateralization, or consolidation under more robust custody. In several past cases where old coins moved after years of dormancy, the assets also ended up with brokers or custodians, not directly on retail exchanges.

Every day a Bitcoin stays unmoved, it accumulates one day of age. When a large stash transfers after years of holding, the “Coin Days Destroyed” metric spikes, signaling significant activity by long-term holders.

Such transfers can cause speculation about whether the owner intends to sell or is simply restructuring their holdings. Large, dormant wallets reactivating can also influence market sentiment, especially if they occur during periods of heightened trading.

Pattern of ancient wallets reactivating

This event is part of an ongoing trend. Similar movements include a Satoshi-era whale who shifted $11 million after 12 years inactive in 2023, and another transfer of dormant coins after more than a decade. In 2024, nearly 50,000 BTC valued at $2 billion were moved, with analysts suggesting institutional rebalancing as a factor. Multiple incidents in 2025 saw whales shifting billions, often to professional crypto infrastructure rather than quickly liquidating on exchanges.

In most cases, these transfers point to industry custodians or service providers instead of individual early adopters cashing out. The motives behind such moves remain unclear, with possible explanations ranging from enhanced security to asset management needs.

As traders track movements like this, platforms focused on bridging traditional finance and crypto, such as 1stepSwap, are introducing new ways to diversify portfolios. By integrating real-world assets directly onto the blockchain, users gain streamlined access to major US company shares and commodities like gold and silver from their crypto wallets, all while 1stepSwap seeks out optimal market prices for seamless transactions.

The reawakened Bitcoins remain in the new receiving address as of Friday, with market participants watching closely for any further transactions.
