The city of Lugano in Switzerland has attracted the attention of the crypto community with a recent decision. According to this decision, residents and companies in the city can make payments for municipal services and taxes using cryptocurrency. This step will contribute to the local adoption of Bitcoin. The officials of Lugano city officially announced on December 5th that the local administration now accepts cryptocurrency payments for taxes and all other community fees.
An Important Step in Lugano City
Following the announcement, residents and companies can make their payments through Bitcoin or Tether via Bitcoin Suisse, Switzerland’s institutional cryptocurrency platform. Additionally, Lugano residents and companies can pay all local bills, regardless of the nature of the service or the amount billed, with various cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin.
The residents of the city can make Bitcoin payments using the Swiss QR invoice method by scanning the code on the bill or by using their preferred mobile wallet and selected cryptocurrency.
With the decision in Lugano, Bitcoin technology will be primarily used to transform the city’s financial system. This decision is known to be part of Plan B, a joint effort with Tether. Bitcoin Suisse supports Lugano in its Plan B by providing integrated payment solutions and accepting cryptocurrency payments for tax collection and other municipal services.
Crypto Process in Switzerland
Lugano started adopting cryptocurrencies for tax payments as part of the collaboration with Tether in March 2022. The city has previously offered blockchain-based solutions such as the MyLugano app, LVGA Points payment token, Lugano crypto franc, and 3Achain blockchain infrastructure.
Lugano is not the first city in Switzerland to embrace Bitcoin for payments and take significant steps towards blockchain technology. In 2021, Zug Canton started accepting Bitcoin and Ethereum for tax payments from companies and residents. Zermatt, a municipality in the Valais Canton, partnered with Bitcoin Suisse in January 2020 to offer the option of paying taxes with Bitcoin.
