Bitcoin infrastructure development company Trust Machines has announced the launch of a new entity, Orange Domains, which aims to expand Bitcoin Name System (BNS) functionality through decentralized applications and better connect traditional Domain Name System (DNS) services with Web3. The current DNS-supported internet system lacks a direct connection to modern blockchain ecosystems.
Significant Step in the Bitcoin Ecosystem
According to a press release dated March 4, made public by the team, Orange Domains aims to create more interconnectivity by directly linking traditional DNS addresses with Bitcoin-based BNS addresses.
The new Web3 service will function as an immutable token, providing users with the keys to equivalent domain names, enabling them to create websites, send emails, develop smart contracts, or manage financing from a single blockchain-based domain.
The launch was announced about a week after Bitcoin’s price exceeded $60,000 for the first time in over two years since its all-time high in November 2021.
Tucows Domains CEO Responds Promptly
Orange Domains was jointly established with internet services company Tucows and Hiro, a firm focused on creating Web3 developer tools to bring Web3 to the Bitcoin ecosystem. Trust Machines had previously raised $150 million to create different applications within the Bitcoin ecosystem. According to Tucows Domains CEO Dave Woroch, the new service will set a critical industry standard for domain names and Web3 identity. Woroch stated in the announcement:
“With 30 years of experience, Tucows, a pioneer in the domain name industry, is particularly well-positioned to support this initiative. We bring DNS infrastructure that will help bridge the gap between Web3 and the traditional internet experience of everyday users, vital distribution channels, and critical industry expertise to Orange Domains.”
Orange Domains aims to expand the functionality of the BNS namespace built on Stacks, one of the leading Bitcoin Layer-2 networks with smart contract functionality. Users can currently purchase .btc Web3 identities on BNS, and the registration is completed directly on the Bitcoin network.
