The UK High Court has frozen the assets of computer scientist and businessman Craig Wright. The main reason for this action is to help entrepreneur Peter McCormack recover approximately 1.5 million British Pounds in legal costs. These costs stem from a defamation lawsuit Wright filed against McCormack in 2019.
Recalling the Conflict Between Wright and McCormack
The legal conflict between Wright and McCormack began with various public statements, including tweets and a YouTube video, where McCormack accused Wright of falsely claiming to be Bitcoin‘s pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto.
Wright, who began claiming to be Nakamoto in 2016, took these accusations seriously and initiated legal action against McCormack for defamation.
Debates Over the Satoshi Nakamoto Claim
Wright’s claim to be Nakamoto became a highly controversial topic within the cryptocurrency community. To support his claim, Wright filed lawsuits against 13 Bitcoin Core developers, alleging they infringed on copyrights related to the Bitcoin whitepaper and specific elements of the Bitcoin protocol.
The Crypto Open Patent Alliance (COPA), representing several defendants in Wright’s lawsuits, presented significant evidence showing that Wright fabricated documents to support his claims.
What Does the Court Decision Mean?
After carefully evaluating the evidence presented by COPA, including allegations of forgery against Wright, the court concluded that Wright is not Satoshi Nakamoto. This decision, delivered by Judge James Mellor, dismantled Wright’s narrative of being Bitcoin’s inventor. It also provided a legal basis for dismissing the defamation claims against McCormack.
As a result, the court ruled that McCormack did not defame Wright and is entitled to recover his legal costs. The freezing of Wright’s assets was a direct consequence of this decision. This allows McCormack to recoup his legal expenses. Wright likely did not believe his own claims and is now facing the financial repercussions of his actions. As the saying goes, don’t lift a stone you can’t carry; Wright was crushed under the weight of the Satoshi Nakamoto claim.
