Brazil’s leading financial exchange, B3, is introducing six innovative derivatives contracts on April 27, enabling investors to speculate on the likelihood of key future events. These new products span a variety of market activities, including the movement of bitcoin prices, fluctuations of the U.S. dollar, and changes in the Ibovespa index, offering expanded opportunities for sophisticated market participants.

Event-driven contracts open new opportunities for investors

Known as Event Contracts, these instruments operate in a manner similar to international prediction markets such as Kalshi and Polymarket. According to B3, each contract’s price fluctuates based on how the market perceives the probability of the relevant event occurring. Contracts are capped at a maximum price of 100 Brazilian reals, with settlements made in cash rather than physical delivery of the underlying asset.

At launch, these derivatives will focus on mini futures and spot contracts tied to the Ibovespa index, U.S. dollar, and bitcoin. The design of each contract emphasizes fixed returns and clearly defined risk profiles, addressing the needs of institutional and professional investors. B3 notes that, at present, eligibility is limited to individuals or entities with over 10 million reals in assets or those who hold approval from Brazil’s Securities and Exchange Commission (CVM).

Luiz Masagão, Vice President of Products and Clients at B3, characterized this rollout as part of a comprehensive initiative aimed at modernizing Brazil’s derivatives market.

Emergence of prediction markets and ongoing regulatory debates

B3 already offers derivatives linked to central bank policy decisions in other countries and is closely monitoring advances in global prediction markets. Late last year, the company also revealed plans to launch its own tokenization platform and a stablecoin, both of which are expected to become operational before year-end.

With the introduction of event-driven contracts, B3 becomes Brazil’s first federally regulated prediction market. Previously, platforms like Prévias and Palpitada were operating under regulatory uncertainty. Meanwhile, U.S.-based Kalshi recently established a partnership with XP International, one of Brazil’s largest brokerages, to offer relevant contracts in the country.

The global appetite for prediction markets continues to grow rapidly, with total trading volumes approaching $160 billion and user numbers exceeding three million. Platforms such as Polymarket and Kalshi are now regarded as major influencers in the international marketplace.

Significantly, Intercontinental Exchange, the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange, has brought its total investments in Polymarket close to $2 billion. This involvement illustrates the growing interest of major financial institutions in prediction markets.

Despite these swift advances, uncertainty persists regarding the regulation of prediction markets. In Brazil, there is not yet an official consensus on which authority should oversee these operations. Legal experts note that discussions are ongoing about whether regulatory responsibility should rest with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Central Bank, or the Treasury.
