EthSystems, a provider of blockchain-based infrastructure for financial institutions, has shifted to a for-profit business structure in response to increasing institutional demand for regulated onchain finance solutions.
Institutional shift drives strategic move
Co-founder Mo Jalil explained that most financial institutions require some form of confidentiality in their operations. He emphasized that confidentiality does not imply anonymity or secrecy, but rather the ability to control who accesses specific information, when, and how.
Confidentiality, according to Jalil, is about “controls over who sees what, when and how” rather than keeping information hidden from all parties.
EthSystems’ decision to adopt a commercial business model followed strong interest from prospective clients. While operating under its previous structure within a nonprofit foundation, Jalil and his team developed several proof-of-concept blockchain applications. He noted that institutions frequently requested to bring these models into production, requesting to pay EthSystems for deployment and services. However, the foundation structure prevented the team from accepting such projects on a for-fee basis.
Transitioning to a for-profit entity, Jalil stated, has enabled EthSystems to fund its activities more efficiently and participate in formal procurement processes common among major financial firms.
From experimentation to production
Jalil reported that demand from financial institutions has evolved significantly over the past year. Initial conversations with clients mainly involved innovation teams exploring blockchain’s potential. Presently, business units responsible for trading desks and asset management are engaging directly with EthSystems to implement onchain asset transfers and real-world financial flows.
Institutions are moving beyond experimentation, now seeking to “get assets onchain and move real financial flows onchain,” according to Jalil.
Jalil believes this shift validates EthSystems’ thesis: that financial institutions now accept the value of blockchain technology, but need robust infrastructure satisfying both regulatory and confidentiality requirements.
Mini dictionary: EthSystems is a blockchain infrastructure company focused on providing regulated onchain finance solutions to institutional clients, aiming to bridge the gap between traditional finance and decentralized technologies.
Industry context
In recent months, institutional interest in blockchain-based financial products has accelerated. Initially, many organizations limited their involvement to pilot programs or small-scale trials. Now, a growing number are seeking scalable, secure, and regulatory-compliant systems that enable the direct transfer and management of assets on blockchain networks.
This change in participation coincides with a period of technological maturation within decentralized finance (DeFi) and increased scrutiny from regulators. Providers like EthSystems are positioning themselves to capitalize on these developments by offering tailored solutions meeting both compliance and confidentiality standards.
