Bitcoin entered August with muted price action as major risk assets globally, including US equities and gold, posted new highs. Meanwhile, oil prices eased, reflecting market expectations that previous supply concerns had diminished. Despite these shifts, Bitcoin closed slightly higher than the previous day but remained down 0.15% compared to earlier levels.

Volatility and Market Sentiment

At the same time, Bitcoin trailed the S&P 500 by more than 4 index points, highlighting a market climate dominated by low volatility yet marked by unstable sentiment. Analysts have pointed to this divergence as indicative of a broader reluctance among crypto traders, despite robust performance elsewhere in the risk asset sector.

A notable incident took place on July 31, when an exploit targeting a five-year-old key-generation vulnerability in Coldcard hardware wallets led to the theft of approximately 594 BTC, worth about $38 million. This breach affected around 500 self-custodied wallets.

Glassnode data revealed a sharp surge in the Revived Supply 1-year metric, with nearly 119,423 BTC moving over three days as users responded to the incident and transferred funds to new addresses.

Roughly 10% of these moved assets were sent to exchanges. Despite being one of the most significant recent forced movements of long-dormant Bitcoin, the market price showed little reaction, suggesting a lack of substantial liquidity on both buy and sell sides.

Institutional Flows and ETF Activity

In contrast to previous quarters, institutions appeared to be stepping back from the market, altering demand dynamics. US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds returned about 65,800 BTC to the market in June, representing the largest monthly outflow so far this year. For 2024, outflows exceeded 218,000 BTC. Although buying activity from corporate entities persisted, it did not fully offset the ETF-driven withdrawals.

The Seller Exhaustion Constant, a metric tracked by Glassnode, reached a record low. However, it remained about a third higher than the lowest points seen during prior bear markets, suggesting that a full recovery may require additional structural support from buyers.

Market Structure and Portfolio Tools

In the options market, implied volatility for one-month contracts approached 23%, the upper end of a relatively narrow band, while the downside implied volatility hovered around its long-term average. Notably, the weekly 25-Delta Skew shifted more than 8 points in a single session, a significant move considering limited spot price fluctuations.

Given unpredictable price swings and sudden liquidity events such as the recent Coldcard incident, many investors are turning to integrated management tools for enhanced market monitoring. CryptoAppsy, which requires no account creation hassle, combines crypto investment tracking with real-time prices, advanced charting, and multi-currency portfolio management on a single screen. Users can set up smart price alerts, customize news feeds according to their coin holdings, identify newly listed altcoins as they debut, and access key macroeconomic data such as Fed interest rates, enabling a proactive approach to rapidly changing markets.

Despite a significant movement of long-dormant coins triggered by a security breach, Bitcoin’s market depth remained shallow, and prices were barely affected, reflecting limited immediate buy or sell interest at prevailing levels.
