Dispute over BIP 110

The removal followed a proposal by Mark Erhardt, another prominent Bitcoin developer, who recommended Dashjr’s dismissal on the Bitcoin Developer mailing list. Erhardt alleged that Dashjr had played a significant role in BIP 110’s creation and implementation, raising concerns that Dashjr showed favoritism toward the proposal during his tenure as editor.

According to Erhardt, Dashjr attempted to assign BIP 110 a number prior to comprehensive discussion on the mailing list and quickly merged changes to the proposal. This led to further scrutiny within the developer community, culminating in a request for his removal as editor.

Erhardt contended that Dashjr’s early assignment of the proposal and swift updates bypassed standard processes expected of a BIP editor.

Removal confirmed by repository administrators

Jon Atack, a key contributor in the Bitcoin ecosystem, stated that he verified the revocation of Dashjr’s editor and administrator rights from the BIPs repository after considering community feedback. Atack then proceeded to merge the pull request, officially updating the list of active BIP editors and removing Dashjr’s name.

Dashjr criticized the decision, stating, “This is just an abuse of power by Core. They have no authority to do so.”

BIP 110 and its implications

BIP 110 was designed to temporarily limit the quantity of arbitrary data embedded in Bitcoin transactions. This measure sparked controversy, particularly when the enforcement of the proposal resulted in a minority chain split. Nodes that adhered to BIP 110 rejected blocks from miners who did not signal support, leading to a short-lived fork with minimal hashpower backing.

The technical debate around BIP 110 has extended beyond the core development team, with some involved in the community raising additional objections in various forums and channels.

Mini dictionary: BIP (Bitcoin Improvement Proposal), a standardized format for proposing changes to the Bitcoin protocol, requiring rigorous peer review and community consensus before implementation.

This incident highlights ongoing debates about governance and transparency in protocol development within the Bitcoin ecosystem.
