Metaplanet, a Japanese investment firm known for its substantial bitcoin holdings, moved 3,881 BTC worth approximately $247 million between its own wallets on Wednesday, according to data from Arkham. The movement of funds occurred in several transactions completed over a span of three hours.
Internal transfers, not market sales
The transactions involved shifting bitcoin from Metaplanet’s cold storage wallets to new blockchain addresses that remain under the company’s control. None of the transfers went to exchanges, indicating that the assets were not made available for trade or sale to the public market.
Transferring assets to newly created wallets that are still managed internally is a standard security or custody practice among institutional holders. Unlike deposits made to exchanges, these movements do not immediately add to the actively tradable supply of bitcoin.
Metaplanet’s internal on-chain activity aligned with patterns previously observed, showing test transactions followed by significant transfers to fresh wallets, a structure that suggests internal management rather than distribution.
Repeating previous patterns
This is not the first time Metaplanet has conducted such large internal transfers. In March, the company moved close to 5,000 BTC using a similar pattern—small test transactions first, then larger sums consolidated in new self-custody wallets.
Analysts previously interpreted these moves as internal restructuring or enhanced security rather than preparations for selling assets. No indications in the latest on-chain activity suggest any change to this regular custody approach.
Metaplanet’s bitcoin strategy
Metaplanet currently holds around 43,000 BTC, acquired at an average price of roughly $96,000 per bitcoin. With bitcoin trading near $63,600, the firm is carrying an unrealized loss of about $1.4 billion, which represents a decrease of 34% from its purchase price.
Since April 2024, the company has become one of the most active corporate bitcoin accumulators, setting a public goal to reach a total of 210,000 BTC in its reserves.
