Bitcoin has experienced a steep decline since reaching its all-time high of $126,080 in October 2026, with the price now trading in the low $60,000 range—a loss of nearly half its value. This downturn has unsettled investors and fueled debate about when the current cycle may reach a definitive bottom.

Halving cycle patterns and on-chain signals

Investment firm VanEck, known for its exchange-traded funds and market research, attributes the rapid correction to Bitcoin’s established four-year halving cycles. In these cycles, the issuance of new BTC is cut by 50%, often leading to heightened volatility and subsequent price declines after major bull runs.

VanEck deploys a proprietary GEO framework—assessing global liquidity, ecosystem leverage, and on-chain activity—to evaluate market positioning. Two of these metrics are currently rated as neutral, while ecosystem leverage appears constructive. VanEck’s analysis suggests these factors indicate the early formation of a market bottom and suggests that investors consider gradually re-entering positions instead of attempting to time a precise turnaround.

On-chain analytics provider CryptoQuant has also examined the current cycle using Net Unrealized Profit/Loss (NUPL) indicators. Analyst MorenoDV found that long-term Bitcoin holders are facing more severe unrealized losses than the average market participant, a situation that has previously aligned with major market lows. However, CryptoQuant cautions that the metric may still decline further, implying a potential for continued downside before a true floor is established.

Mini dictionary: Net Unrealized Profit/Loss (NUPL), a key on-chain metric, measures the difference between a coin holder’s unrealized gains or losses, helping analysts identify market sentiment and potential reversal points.

On-chain metrics show long-term holders are facing deeper unrealized losses than short-term investors. Historically, major cycle bottoms often coincide with this type of capitulation.

Technical indicators hint at momentum shift

Katie Stockton, founder of Fairlead Strategies and portfolio manager of the Amplify Fairlead Tactical Bitcoin ETF, states that her preferred technical indicators now signal long-term oversold readings. She has observed a reversal in long-term momentum following months of pronounced selling pressure.

“We’re already observing indicators of long-term downside exhaustion,” Stockton explained, adding that the combination of oversold conditions and rising momentum makes the technical case especially compelling at this stage.

Stockton also pointed to historically low implied volatility for Bitcoin, and CryptoQuant’s founder, Ki Young Ju, has highlighted that hedge fund exposure has moved to net long in BTC futures—a signal that some large traders see buying opportunities at current levels.

Bottom targets and analyst projections

Geoffrey Kendrick, head of crypto research at Standard Chartered, predicted a cycle low for Bitcoin at $59,000 in June, stating that “winter is over.” The cryptocurrency ended June at $58,566, its lowest monthly close in nearly two years. In contrast, Galaxy Research has outlined a more cautious scenario, targeting a bottom between $40,000 and $46,000 for the fourth quarter of 2026, with their most bearish outlook forecasting a capitulation low at $28,000.

Glassnode, an on-chain data intelligence platform, notes that 45 separate Bitcoin metrics are currently in capitulation territory, marking the longest such period since the FTX exchange collapse in November 2022. Market strategists from firms including Cowen, CryptoQuant, and trader Peter Brandt converge on the possibility that a bottom could form between September and October.

As Bitcoin trades near $63,000, the nearly 49% drawdown from its peak continues to test market sentiment. Many investors remain focused on whether renewed buying interest from long-term holders and institutions will be sufficient to stabilize prices amid ongoing sell pressure.
