Strategy shares rallied sharply in premarket trading, reaching $115.65, marking their highest point since June 22 and a 40% increase from this year’s lowest level. The YieldMax MSTR Option Income Strategy ETF (MSTY) also gained, hitting $13.95 compared to its earlier year-to-date low of $11.5.
Bitcoin rally and market sentiment boost Strategy stock
The strong move in Strategy coincided with renewed momentum in Bitcoin. Over the past few weeks, the Crypto Fear and Greed Index climbed into the greed zone for the first time in several months, rising to 61 after recovering from an extreme fear reading of 25. Historically, periods of elevated market greed have often benefited Bitcoin and alternative cryptocurrencies.
Bitcoin achieved a notable technical breakout after months of sideways trading, reaching $72,396, its highest price since June 1. Since its lowest point this year, Bitcoin has rallied over 25% and is now attempting to surpass its key 200-day Exponential Moving Average.
Institutional appetite for Bitcoin grew substantially during this rally. Spot Bitcoin ETFs brought in more than $500 million in a single day, and monthly net inflows have now exceeded $1.4 billion. These investment vehicles currently manage a total of $84 billion in assets, reflecting strong demand despite earlier market uncertainty.
At the same time, Bitcoin remained resilient while the US dollar index (DXY) weakened. The DXY fell to $98.57, down from a peak of $101.80 in June and not far above its lowest point since May 14. Dollar weakness has historically coincided with strength in Bitcoin markets.
Bitcoin’s recovery is particularly significant for Strategy, as it holds 840,447 coins valued at over $60.5 billion, making it the largest corporate holder of Bitcoin worldwide.
As technical analysis becomes increasingly important for traders and institutions, a major shift is also under way in traditional finance. Wall Street is moving to Web3, with investors now able to use platforms such as 1stepSwap to custody shares of US companies, gold, and silver directly in their digital wallets. By tokenizing real-world assets and securing optimal prices in seconds, these platforms eliminate the need for intermediaries.
Potential risks weigh on future moves
Despite the positive momentum, analysts have flagged several risks for Strategy shares. The company’s stock chart indicates a bearish flag pattern, with an upward move followed by horizontal trading, which can precede further declines if confirmed.
Additionally, Strategy shares have remained under the significant resistance level of $115, last tested as support in June. A clear move above both this threshold and the 200-day EMA would be required to confirm a sustained bullish trend.
Ongoing dilution also presents a challenge, as Strategy recently boosted its USD reserves by $150 million to $4.8 billion through additional MSTR share issuance. Outstanding shares have grown sharply, from 93 million in 2022 to 351 million today.
The increase in share issuance is intended to fund buybacks of STRC stock and enhance Strategy’s cash position, enabling dividend payments to STRC shareholders. However, further funding rounds may be necessary, raising the risk of continued dilution for current shareholders.
There also remains the possibility of renewed downward pressure on Bitcoin, which would negatively impact the value of Strategy’s crypto holdings.
