Bitcoin surged 4.57% over the past 24 hours to reach $72,500, buoyed by strong spot ETF inflows and elevated open interest across derivatives markets. At press time, Bitcoin maintained the $72,500 level, marking one of its highest price points so far in the year.
Strong ETF inflows fuel Bitcoin rally
On August 20, analytics platform Lookonchain highlighted substantial net inflows into Bitcoin ETFs. Daily net flow amounted to 6,603 BTC, equivalent to $472.2 million, while the seven-day total reached 11,149 BTC, valued at $797.21 million.
Lookonchain reported that in the latest week, “7D NetFlow: +11,149 $BTC (+$797.21M)” entered spot Bitcoin ETFs, underscoring persistent demand.
US-based ETF research provider SoSoValue recorded a $517.19 million net inflow on August 19 for US spot Bitcoin ETFs. As of the same date, cumulative net inflows approached $52.79 billion, while total net assets rose to $84.31 billion.
These data points suggest that investor appetite for spot Bitcoin ETFs remains elevated, providing a strong foundation for the latest price advance.

Technical breakout above key resistance
Charts from TradingView show Bitcoin has broken above its previous resistance at $67,333 and now trades above the 20-, 50-, 100-, and 200-day exponential moving averages (EMAs). The 200-day EMA stands at $71,549.86, while the 100-day EMA is $66,552.56.
Trading volume has also climbed, with recent movements recording approximately 31,520 BTC traded, further strengthening the breakout’s technical backdrop. Analysts believe holding above the $67,333 level is crucial for maintaining positive momentum. A drop below this threshold, or under the 200-day EMA, could undermine the breakout and activate deeper correction risks.
Technical analysis signals short-term bullishness for Bitcoin as long as prices remain above the $71,549.86 and $67,333 confirmation levels.
The next key downside area if the breakout fails is at $62,975, which could become relevant if sellers regain control and drive the price lower.
Open interest trends and market volatility
CoinGlass data showed open interest in Bitcoin futures approaching $51 billion as BTC rallied toward $69,000 on August 20. Rising open interest alongside robust price gains signals heightened participation in derivatives markets, although it can result in sharp volatility if leveraged traders unwind positions rapidly during downturns.
Cryptocurrency analysts noted that the combination of elevated spot ETF demand and increasing participation in the derivatives market has helped drive the latest price surge. However, ongoing market fluctuations may persist given the speculative nature of digital assets.
Bitcoin remains the world’s largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, frequently serving as a bellwether for the broader digital asset market. Spot ETFs, which allow investors to gain exposure to Bitcoin through traditional financial markets, have attracted significant institutional and retail interest in 2024.
Mini dictionary: Spot ETF, or Exchange-Traded Fund, is a type of investment fund that tracks the spot price of an underlying asset—such as Bitcoin—and is traded on stock exchanges. This enables investors to gain exposure to digital assets without directly holding them, often attracting broader participation from traditional finance.
Market participants are watching to see if Bitcoin can sustain its gains above technical support levels, as the digital asset market remains volatile. Investors are encouraged to carefully assess ongoing price trends and market fluctuations before making investment decisions.
