Market drivers: Liquidity boost and institutional demand

The latest surge in Bitcoin’s price comes after the US Treasury expanded buybacks of longer-dated Treasury bonds, a move that eased yields and improved the liquidity environment for risk assets including digital currencies.

In parallel, Washington has renewed efforts to support cryptocurrency legislation, which has lifted sentiment across the digital asset market. Institutional demand has followed suit, with spot Bitcoin ETFs in the United States reporting an inflow of $517.19 million on Wednesday, the highest single-day intake since early May. BlackRock’s IBIT accounted for $284.7 million of that total.

BTC Markets analyst Rachael Lucas noted that these ETF inflows reflected substantial institutional repositioning, rather than merely retail-driven enthusiasm. She highlighted that larger investors appear to view current price levels as attractive entry points, adding real momentum to recent market gains.

ETF activity is not just about leveraged trading, but indicates that significant capital is entering the market directly, lending more legitimacy to the ongoing rally.

While these factors provide strong underlying support, analysts argue that only part of Bitcoin’s sharp move above $70,000 can be attributed to new investment flows.

Short squeeze accelerates rally

Over $3 billion worth of bearish positions were liquidated during Bitcoin’s surge, fueling a powerful wave of forced buying as exchanges closed leveraged short trades. This mechanism, known as a short squeeze, can significantly accelerate price moves but may lose momentum once the forced buying subsides.

Nicolai Sondergaard, a senior research analyst at Nansen, warned that the rapid gains may have been driven more by this short squeeze than by steady, sustained buying from investors.

Adam McCarthy, a researcher at Lo:Tech, observed that more than half of Wednesday’s rise in Bitcoin occurred in just one hour as short sellers were compelled to buy back into the market. He commented, “That fuel is spent, so the next leg has to be bought rather than squeezed.”

This distinction is crucial, as further gains would need new investors to step in and buy, rather than relying on traders forced to cover their positions.

Technical backdrop and new trends

From a technical standpoint, Bitcoin has moved decisively above its 200-day moving average at $69,000 and held ground over the psychological $70,000 level. However, analysts remain cautious in declaring the move a lasting breakout.

James Butterfill, head of research at CoinShares, said that while conditions remain constructive, accumulation by large holders has yet to reach levels that would signal a prolonged advance. He identified $80,000 as a key resistance point, suggesting that a clear break may depend on evidence of a shift in Federal Reserve policy away from further tightening.

Meanwhile, data from Bespoke Investment Group showed Bitcoin became more than four standard deviations overbought during Thursday’s rally, highlighting the unusual speed and intensity of the move.

Amid these shifting market patterns, a broader transformation is underway: Wall Street is embracing Web3 technology. Investors now have the ability to hold shares of major US companies, as well as gold and silver, directly in their crypto wallets using platforms such as 1stepSwap. By enabling real-world assets to be tokenized and instantly sourcing the best market prices, these platforms are removing traditional intermediaries from trading, accelerating the pace and efficiency of asset transfers.
