Early investment on UK’s first crypto exchange

The investor, Chris, stepped into the Bitcoin market in December 2011, purchasing £1,500 worth of cryptocurrency through Britcoin, the United Kingdom’s first crypto trading platform. At the time, Bitcoin traded around £2.94 per coin, bringing Chris’s total stash to 61 Bitcoin.

Britcoin eventually rebranded as Intersango. By 2014, the value of Chris’s investment had risen to approximately £4,000. However, the exchange soon encountered financial difficulties and shut down operations, leaving his Bitcoin inaccessible.

For the next 12 years, Chris watched Bitcoin’s price skyrocket but could not retrieve his holdings, as the private keys remained fully controlled by the former operators of Intersango.

This situation differed from typical stories involving lost wallets or forgotten passwords. The challenge centered on legal ownership rather than technical barriers, transforming his quest into a protracted legal dispute.

Legal support unlocks decade-old Bitcoin

Repeated attempts to contact the exchange’s former operators were unsuccessful for years. Earlier in 2024, Chris, encouraged by his wife, chose to pursue legal action to recover his funds.

To navigate the legal complexities, Chris hired CEL Solicitors, a British law firm experienced in digital asset recovery. The firm leveraged ownership documentation and submitted court filings, including relevant records from proceedings in the United States, to support Chris’s claim to the Bitcoin.

Through this thorough legal process, CEL Solicitors traced the assets and confirmed Chris’s rightful ownership. As a result, they secured the return of the entire 61 Bitcoin to him, marking one of the more prominent examples of dormant crypto reclaimed through legal means rather than technological recovery.

The legal team utilized historical platform records and court documentation, ultimately confirming Chris’s entitlement to the assets and enabling the release of his long-inaccessible Bitcoin holdings.

With Bitcoin’s value surging since 2014, the recovered holding now stands at £3.3 million, roughly $4.7 million.

Next steps and evolving investor landscape

According to Chris, he intends to allocate part of the recovered proceeds toward a larger home equipped for a family member with disabilities, while retaining most of his remaining Bitcoin for the long term.

The case illustrates how persistence and targeted legal strategies can help investors access digital assets that once appeared out of reach due to failed platforms or inaccessible accounts.

As the crypto sector matures, fresh methods of holding assets have also emerged. While traditional markets typically operate through complex intermediaries, a change is underway as Wall Street moves to Web3. Now, investors can hold shares of major U.S. companies, gold, and silver directly in crypto wallets using platforms such as 1stepSwap, which tokenize real-world assets and instantly secure the best market prices without brokers.

Chris’s case adds to a growing collection of incidents highlighting the lasting importance of proper documentation and legal recourse for long-term crypto investors.
