US equities opened lower on Monday as renewed military clashes between the US and Iran triggered a surge in oil prices and fueled inflation concerns, complicating expectations for the Federal Reserve’s next move.

Oil prices climb after US-Iran tensions flare

Fresh hostilities erupted over the weekend as the US military struck two rocket launchers on Iran’s Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil transit route. US Central Command confirmed the operation, which marked the first publicly acknowledged US action against Iranian positions since late July. In response, Iranian state media reported that Tehran launched retaliatory strikes on US bases in Jordan.

The escalating conflict caused oil markets to react sharply. West Texas Intermediate crude jumped over 3% to trade above $86 per barrel, while Brent crude futures also rose more than 3%, topping $91 per barrel.

Energy stocks benefited from stronger oil prices. Oilfield services provider Halliburton gained 3.04%, while refining company Valero Energy advanced 1.84% during the session.

Analysts noted that rising crude prices could intensify inflationary pressures just weeks ahead of a critical Federal Reserve policy meeting.

Rising rate hike expectations before key Fed decision

Market participants reassessed the outlook for US monetary policy after Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh stated at the Jackson Hole symposium that further interest rate hikes could be needed if inflation does not decline toward the central bank’s 2% objective.

CME FedWatch data showed traders assigning nearly a 60% probability to a rate hike in September, up sharply from 41.4% the week before. This shift comes as recent inflation readings painted a mixed picture: July’s consumer data indicated moderate price pressures, but Personal Consumption Expenditures for the same period were higher than anticipated.

The August employment report, scheduled for release on September 4, will be closely watched, alongside new US manufacturing and services data expected this week.

Investors will be focused on the Federal Reserve’s September meeting after rising oil prices and mixed inflation data increased uncertainty around future rate moves.

Meanwhile, chipmaker Nvidia slipped 0.31%, while AMD edged up 0.6% as trading opened.

Stock performance in August and crypto market update

Despite the latest volatility, major US indexes delivered strong gains throughout August. The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 2.1% in the month, poised for a fifth consecutive monthly gain. The S&P 500 rose around 3%, while the Nasdaq Composite advanced 4%, putting both on track for their first monthly increases since May.

Technology stocks led the advance, with the S&P 500 technology sector up nearly 6%. Nvidia jumped more than 8% in August, while Microsoft and Micron Technology posted 10% and 13% gains respectively.

However, persistent inflation concerns and a surge in Treasury yields contributed to market volatility, keeping investors wary about elevated long-term borrowing costs.

Most crypto-related stocks traded higher, with Bitcoin changing hands below $78,000.

GameStop advanced 4.8% after announcing it will use available cash to finance approximately 27% of a planned $1.4 billion debt exchange, reducing the need for additional share issuance and limiting further dilution.

GameStop, a prominent US video game retailer, made headlines last year following a retail trading frenzy that saw its stock price soar and then decline. Halliburton and Valero Energy are major players in the US energy sector.

Mini dictionary: Larak Island, a strategically located island in the Strait of Hormuz, is frequently cited in regional security developments due to its proximity to critical oil shipping lanes.
