Prosecutors in Mexico have charged two men with targeting the home of Jonathan Meléndez, keyboardist for the well-known indie band Camilo Séptimo, in a violent attack allegedly aimed at obtaining a cold wallet believed to contain millions of dollars in Bitcoin. The suspects are accused of murdering Meléndez, his pregnant wife, young daughter, and a domestic worker during the home invasion.

Targeted attack on musician’s family

Authorities reported that the attack took place in Atizapán de Zaragoza, State of Mexico, on September 1. Meléndez, his wife Ana Paula Barragán, their three-year-old daughter Sofía, and 21-year-old domestic worker Aleyda Romero were found dead at the scene. The couple’s six-year-old son survived the incident.

Investigators stated that the suspects entered the residence with the intent to find a cold wallet, a type of secure storage device for cryptocurrencies, which they believed held “million-dollar amounts in Bitcoin.”

State prosecutors described that the suspects sought the family’s cold wallet, thinking it stored assets worth millions in Bitcoin, which led to the fatal attack.

Arrests and motives detailed by officials

Officials arrested two men in connection with the crime. According to the prosecution, one of the men allegedly offered his accomplice 2 million pesos, approximately $118,000, as a reward for obtaining the cryptocurrency wallet during the home invasion.

State officials contend that the pursuit of high-value crypto holdings has grown increasingly dangerous, with violent tactics used by perpetrators seeking access to digital assets stored offline.

Camilo Séptimo, the band for which Meléndez played keyboards, is recognized for its fusion of alternative rock and electronic music, with a strong following across Latin America.

Rising trend in physical attacks on crypto holders

A report from blockchain analytics company Chainalysis highlighted an increase in violent crimes against cryptocurrency holders. By late June, Chainalysis had documented 46 violent attacks linked to digital assets in 2026 alone, with more than $30 million reported stolen. Home invasions accounted for 37% of these incidents, underscoring the risks faced by individuals holding significant crypto assets.

Earlier this year, two brothers from Texas pleaded guilty to a similar crime in which they held a Minnesota family at gunpoint for over eight hours, forcing the father to transfer more than $8 million in cryptocurrency.

Chainalysis reported that $30 million in crypto was stolen in the first half of 2026, with home invasions representing more than a third of all incidents targeting digital asset holders.

Such attacks demonstrate that cold wallets, while secure against online theft, cannot protect against physical threats, making personal security a growing concern for those holding large amounts of cryptocurrency assets.

Mini dictionary: Cold wallet — A cold wallet is an offline cryptocurrency storage device that holds the private keys required to access and transfer digital assets. Hardware wallets like Ledger, Trezor, and Coldcard are common examples. These wallets provide strong protection from online threats but can still be vulnerable to physical theft or attacks on the owner.

Law enforcement continues to warn digital asset holders to take additional personal security measures, especially as high-profile incidents draw further attention to the risks involved in storing substantial funds in cryptocurrencies.
