Solana, a blockchain network known for its emphasis on high throughput and low fees, has rolled out its Transaction V1 upgrade on the mainnet. The enhancement, implemented at the start of epoch 1035 on September 15, increases the maximum transaction size from 1,232 bytes to 4,096 bytes, offering greater flexibility for developers and users alike.
Technical details and upgrade implementation
The previous 1,232-byte transaction limit stemmed from Solana’s early decision to pack each transaction within a 1,280-byte internet packet—accounting for networking overhead. As the network matured and adjusted its transaction-routing methods, this technical restriction became less relevant for developers aiming to build more complex applications.
With Transaction V1, developers now have access to about 3.3 times more space for signatures, instructions, and cryptographic proof data within a single transaction. While this modification does not directly increase the number of transactions per second processed by the network, it does enable a wider range of actions to fit inside an individual transaction.
The upgrade is especially beneficial for projects using zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs and large multisignature arrangements, which traditionally require extensive cryptographic data that previously could not be accommodated within a single Solana transaction.
Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko highlighted that these changes could pave the way for more efficient use of zero-knowledge roots and future innovations, such as rollup technology, by enabling proofs and state changes to be bundled together.

However, higher network congestion could still compel developers to pay greater priority fees for larger transactions, though there is no additional fee per byte with this upgrade.
The 4,096-byte cap was chosen to align with the common memory page size used by most validator hardware, minimizing unnecessary processing burden. Pushing transaction sizes beyond this level could require additional memory management steps, raising the resource requirements placed on validators.

Network activity and revenue performance
Solana’s network activity has remained robust, processing nearly 10 billion non-vote transactions in the first quarter of 2026, setting an all-time high for the chain. In the following quarter, network volume hovered around 9.7 billion transactions.
On-chain revenue has also seen strong growth. In the third quarter of 2026 so far, Solana’s network revenue reached $327 million, up from $265 million in the second quarter. This represents a 23.4% increase, with revenue fueled by the surge of activity in memecoins, decentralized exchanges, stablecoins, and derivatives platforms operating on Solana.
Higher transaction capacity could provide further support for new and existing decentralized applications, potentially resulting in continued revenue gains in upcoming quarters as network usage expands.
The Transaction V1 upgrade is expected to encourage expanded use cases and greater adoption, solidifying Solana’s position among leading layer-1 blockchains.
