Bitcoin has achieved a significant technical milestone by closing above its 50-week moving average for the first time in nearly a year. The cryptocurrency ended the week of September 20 at $81,159, surpassing the 50-week moving average, which stood at $78,786, as reported by Galaxy Research.
Technical breakout after long-term resistance
This marks Bitcoin’s first weekly close above the indicator in 45 weeks. The last occurrence was on November 9, 2025, which followed the cryptocurrency’s all-time high that exceeded $126,000 in October. Historically, crossings above this moving average have often been considered important signals that a bear-market bottom may be forming. The 50-week moving average reflects the smoothed trend of weekly closes over approximately one year, providing a key indicator for long-term traders and analysts.
During extended bull periods, Bitcoin has tended to stay above this level, whereas it has usually traded below it during bear markets. Galaxy Research described the 50-week average as a “ceiling” during times of major price declines, and losing it frequently led to steep corrections. Importantly, Bitcoin had stayed below this level on every weekly close since November, underscoring the significance of the recent move above it.
Implications of the technical recovery
At $81,159, Bitcoin closed last week around 3% higher than its 50-week moving average, suggesting the breakout was more convincing than marginal. The cryptocurrency is also trading significantly above its slower 200-week moving average, which now sits at $65,487.
Galaxy Research identified five prior Bitcoin bear markets in which the cryptocurrency dropped below the 50-week moving average. In four of these cases, the lowest point of the bear market came before Bitcoin successfully reclaimed this indicator in a weekly close. The firm also highlighted that, during completed bear markets, Bitcoin crossed back above this level on 13 separate weeks, with only two of those moves followed by new price lows.
During previous cycles, consistent closes above the 50-week moving average rarely resulted in further bear-market lows, with only two exceptions out of 13 instances identified by Galaxy Research. Most ultimate lows occurred before this technical recovery, reinforcing its relevance as a potential turning point marker.
However, during the 2021–2022 downturn, temporary recoveries above the 50-week average did not end the bear market, highlighting the need for cautious monitoring even after technical signals.
Context in the wider crypto market
BTC remains around 36% below its all-time high of about $126,000, set on October 6, 2025. If the price manages to sustain above the $79,000 region while the 50-week moving average stabilizes or turns upward, analysts believe this threshold could potentially transform from resistance into support.
A similar need for vigilant market observation is evident in the meme token sector, where sudden surges are driven by internet trends and timing. Data from Fomo App illustrated this with a recent trade in “Niu Lai,” where an initial $99 investment was converted into approximately $370,000. To keep up with rapid changes and spot emerging opportunities, tracking both market timing and trending tokens has become critical. Fomo App brings together tools for discovering tokens and executing trades, while featuring investor rankings, trade notifications, and real-time social feeds to follow activity in the meme token space.
