Dan Morehead, founder and CEO of investment firm Pantera Capital, recently drew attention to Ripple’s ambitions in the global payments sector, referencing the company’s efforts to compete with SWIFT during a CNBC Squawk Box segment. Morehead’s comments offered new context for supporters of both Ripple, a San Francisco-based fintech company specializing in cross-border payment solutions, and the cryptocurrency XRP.

Morehead compares Solana and Ripple’s payment strategy

During the televised discussion, Morehead addressed the topic of blockchain networks delivering specialized capabilities. He pointed to Solana’s transaction processing capacity, stating that the network could handle as many as 9 billion transactions daily. By comparison, he suggested this figure outpaces the volume of activity seen across all capital markets combined.

As the conversation shifted to other blockchain use cases, Morehead highlighted Ripple’s strategy in targeting SWIFT, the established global financial messaging service that facilitates international payments for banks worldwide. Morehead remarked, “There might be other use cases, you know, like Ripple’s going after SWIFT.”

Morehead identified Ripple’s pursuit of SWIFT’s market as an example of how blockchain platforms are exploring niche functions in the financial industry.

He also described Bitcoin as “digital gold” and singled out Solana for its technical performance. The segment examined how newer networks may challenge the dominance of established protocols by offering tailored solutions in fields like payments and finance.

Crypto commentator Amelie, who shared Morehead’s remarks on X, interpreted the CNBC segment as validation for her optimistic outlook on XRP. She wrote that even mainstream business channels now recognize Ripple’s direct competition with SWIFT, tying the development to her expectation of a strong future for the cryptocurrency.

Mini dictionary: SWIFT, or the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication, is a cooperative founded in 1973 and provides a standardized messaging platform that enables secure international payments between thousands of banks globally.

XRP community references past challenges

The conversation also sparked responses from prominent XRP supporters on X, including the user known as $XRPARMY. In their reply, $XRPARMY referenced previous years when business media covered Ripple’s growing presence as a possible SWIFT alternative, particularly between 2017 and 2020.

$XRPARMY recalled that progress slowed after the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filed a lawsuit against Ripple. This regulatory action placed sustained pressure on XRP and affected its role in the digital asset ecosystem.

After the conclusion of the SEC case, $XRPARMY emphasized that Ripple continued to expand its payments infrastructure throughout the legal dispute, describing the current period as a renewed phase in Ripple’s development that had previously been interrupted.

The SEC lawsuit has since concluded, signaling a new stage for Ripple as it advances its payment technology and deepens its focus on financial institutions seeking cross-border solutions.

Ripple’s role in global payments sector

While Morehead’s remarks do not indicate that Ripple has overtaken SWIFT, they reinforced the perception that Ripple’s targeted approach to payments remains a leading blockchain use case. This distinction serves as a point of debate in the investor community regarding the long-term prospects for XRP and the relationship between Ripple’s business activities and the utility of the digital asset.

Supporters like Amelie continue to frame the latest developments as confirmation of XRP’s strategic importance, while others stress the importance of separating Ripple’s enterprise offerings from the independent value of XRP. Nevertheless, Morehead’s comments have reignited discussions around Ripple’s ambitions and how new technologies might reshape international payments.
