The question of decentralization within the XRP Ledger has resurfaced as Justin Bons, founder of Cyber Capital, directed strong criticism at XRP proponents, alleging that retail investors are being misled about the system’s decentralized nature ahead of an imminent XRP Ledger update.

Bons alleges misleading claims and code secrecy

Bons described the sale of XRP as decentralized to retail investors as fraudulent, raising concerns that recent network changes reflect deeper governance and consensus issues within the XRP Ledger. He highlighted what he considers the undocumented and undisclosed nature of recent software code, stating that the project has operated with closed-source code for approximately two weeks.

The controversy intensified when XRP Ledger developers released an emergency update for network servers, version 3.4.1, on September 25. This update included security-critical patches and introduced the fixBatchV1_2 amendment, which is expected to become mandatory on Friday, October 9. Bons expressed concern about the temporary closed-source approach taken by the development team and the lack of immediate transparency for sensitive fixes.

“Selling XRP to retail as ‘decentralized’ is straight up fraud,” he argued, underscoring his position that keeping the updated source code private creates unnecessary security risks.

Development teams confirmed that the security-related changes would remain unpublished in the public source until a full technical retrospective can be released. If the scheduled amendment is sufficiently supported and activated, servers that fail to update will be blocked from keeping up with the network.

Centralization debate and governance model

At the core of the current debate lies the XRP Ledger’s reliance on the Unique Node List (UNL), a model contrasting with Bitcoin‘s more open Proof-of-Work system. The XRP Ledger depends on trusted validators, and both Ripple and the XRP Ledger Foundation provide recommended validator lists that are pre-loaded in server configurations.

Although anyone is technically able to run a validator for the network, participating nodes only impact consensus if included on other participants’ trusted lists. This effectively centralizes decision-making among a select group, according to critics.

The official documentation allows node operators to choose their own trusted validators but cautions that diverging from commonly shared lists can cause a node to fall out of sync with the broader network. Bons asserted that this system provides those who publish recommended lists with disproportionate influence and control.

The debate over validator selection underscores concerns that publishers of recommended lists retain considerable power within the network’s governance structure.

For analysts, such governance dynamics raise broader questions over how power and influence are distributed within the XRP ecosystem, especially when contrasted against other blockchains prioritizing open participation and source transparency.

In fast-moving markets where regulatory decisions or new listings can dramatically shift momentum, traders increasingly seek reliable, integrated tools. In a market where a single Fed decision or a sudden altcoin listing can change everything in seconds, jumping between different apps for charts, news, and portfolio tracking is costing investors money. Smart traders are now utilizing privacy-first tools like CryptoAppsy to consolidate everything. Without even the hassle of creating an account, you get real-time charts, smart price alerts, coin-specific news, and critical macro data all on one screen.
