Gold traded near $4,000 per ounce on Tuesday, October 27, pressured by a stronger US dollar and elevated Treasury yields ahead of a Federal Reserve policy meeting. The spot price of gold was last down 0.4% at about $4,000.52, while December futures dropped 0.6% to $4,014.40, Reuters reported.

Analyst outlook: Goldman Sachs and central-bank demand

Goldman Sachs, a major US investment bank, adjusted its gold price target following the Federal Reserve’s September rate hike. Analyst Lina Thomas lowered the bank’s end-2026 fair-value estimate to $4,650, down from $4,900, while maintaining a more optimistic projection of $5,400 for the end of 2027. This revised 2026 target still indicates a potential 16% gain from current levels, though analysts noted that reaching this value would require a notable recovery in investor sentiment over the next two years.

Goldman’s forecast is underpinned by continued central-bank gold purchases and ongoing diversification of global reserves, factors the bank views as supporting gold prices in the longer term. The company pointed to persistent official sector demand, citing an estimate that central banks acquired 79 tonnes of gold in August.

Central-bank gold purchases continued at an unusual pace, with official sector buying reaching 79 tonnes in August, strengthening long-term demand for bullion, according to Goldman Sachs research.

Despite these purchases, analysts highlighted that gold prices remain vulnerable when interest rates are rising and the US dollar is appreciating. Recent months have seen investors shift away from bullion in response to expectations of tighter US monetary policy.

Mini dictionary: Goldman Sachs is a US-based global investment bank known for research and analysis in financial markets, commodity trading, and asset management.

Market drivers: Dollar strength and Fed expectations

The US dollar rose by approximately 0.3% on Tuesday, reaching its highest level in nearly two weeks. This currency move has made dollar-denominated gold more expensive for international investors, pressuring demand for bullion.

Simultaneously, US Treasury yields remained elevated. Higher yields on government bonds typically make non-interest-bearing assets like gold less attractive, especially in an environment where monetary policy tightening is expected.

Investor focus has shifted toward the Federal Reserve, which is widely anticipated to leave interest rates unchanged at its October 28 meeting. However, persistently high inflation and oil prices close to $116 per barrel have led traders to assign an 82% probability of an additional rate hike in December, according to Reuters.

Investors weigh central-bank demand—particularly from China—as a factor bolstering structural support for gold. However, analysts note that these purchases alone cannot ensure price stability during periods of monetary tightening and strong currency movements.

Technical outlook and institutional targets

Analysts are watching whether gold can maintain support at $4,000. A sustained drop below this threshold could see the metal target $3,950 and potentially $3,900, especially if selling intensifies after the Federal Reserve’s decision.

Conversely, analysts note that a recovery above $4,050 would indicate easing pressure on bullion, while regaining the $4,100 level could pave the way for further upside toward the $4,150 to $4,200 region.

Institutional projections differ: Morgan Stanley cited physical demand and the potential for lower bond yields as grounds for $4,000 support, while Citi previously forecast a medium-term target of $4,500.

Persistent geopolitical risks and ongoing reserve diversification by central banks continue to influence the gold market, although immediate price moves remain tied to US monetary policy expectations and shifts in global currency and bond markets.
