Intent based crypto transactions gain traction as protocols target easier on-chain swaps

In Brief

  • 🚀 Intent based crypto transactions let users request outcomes, not specify technical steps, while solvers compete to execute the deals.

  • ⚡ Cross-chain swaps, privacy features and billions in $ZEC settlements show intent-based adoption is accelerating.

  • 🔍 Protocol safeguards, privacy risks and trust in intermediaries remain key as intent systems expand.

The rise of intent-based crypto transactions is transforming how users interact with blockchain networks, allowing individuals to specify their desired outcome rather than detailing every technical step. Instead of manually constructing each part of a transaction, users express a preferred result, then delegate execution to a network of specialized agents called solvers.

How intent-based crypto transactions work

On August 29, 2025, the Ethereum Foundation characterized an intent as a high-level statement of a user’s desired on-chain result, leaving the implementation details to the execution system. Unlike conventional transactions, which require users to define specific calls and parameters, intents focus on outcomes. This approach lets applications and networks handle the technical complexity on behalf of users.

A typical example involves a user aiming to trade tokens with certain assets and amounts, but without specifying individual blockchain operations. Each intent carries its own limits and rules regarding what constitutes a valid transaction. Protocols differ in how they manage and enforce these constraints.

Documentation from CoW Protocol outlines that instead of submitting a fully-formed transaction, users sign an intent message specifying trade parameters. Multiple solvers can then compete to fulfill the order, with settlement contracts verifying that all conditions are met before finalizing the trade. This setup reflects CoW Protocol’s design and may not apply universally.

CoW Protocol explained that users sign intent messages with asset and amount information, while solvers vie to provide settlement, and smart contracts check if predefined limits are honored before execution.

Lifecycle and role of solvers

The ERC-7683 specification, available as of November 2026 on the Ethereum ERC site, describes a typical process in six stages: a user expresses an intent, the application forms an order, the order enters a feed, solvers evaluate the opportunity, execution occurs, and settlement rewards the solver. This pattern is widely used, though not standardized for every protocol.

ERC-7683 also introduces resolvers, which translate protocol-specific order details into a common language for solvers and allow off-chain information queries. Not all systems require identical escrow, settlement, or fill functions.

Solvers, as execution agents, examine incoming orders and attempt to meet each intent’s conditions. In some protocols, numerous solvers compete to provide optimal settlements, though fulfillment depends on protocol design and solver availability. As of November 2, 2026, CoW Protocol listed 29 active solvers, reflecting the diversity of approaches across the industry.

The Ethereum Foundation cautioned that solver intermediaries introduce new trust and privacy considerations, including the risk of censorship and reliance on complex smart contracts.

Current applications and adoption

Intent systems are already being used to facilitate token swaps, allowing users to specify which assets to exchange and in what quantities while solvers locate the best settlements. They are also enabling cross-chain transfers: users set a destination network and desired amount, then rely on the infrastructure to coordinate the process without handling each detail themselves.

On April 16, 2026, Across reported over $35 billion in bridge volume and sub-minute settlement times for its intent-based infrastructure across seven EVM networks and HyperEVM. These performance metrics were provided by the company as of that date.

Privacy-focused developments have also gained pace. NEAR announced on July 7, 2026, that Confidential Intents were available to developers through its 1Click Swap API. According to NEAR, its system had settled more than $1.5 billion in ZEC via Near Intents, with Confidential Mode accounting for over 40% of near.com’s volume in several weeks. The specifics of privacy and availability depend on each network and implementation.

Benefits and considerations

Intent-based transactions can streamline the user experience by reducing the technical burden. However, users must rely on applications, solvers, and smart contracts to execute their requests faithfully. Competition among solvers can improve outcomes, but trust in protocol safeguards remains essential.

Intent systems have enabled applications such as cross-network token swaps and privacy solutions, but also introduce dependencies on system design, solver operations, and settlement mechanisms. The Ethereum Foundation noted potential risks including reliance on intermediaries, smart contract errors, app vulnerabilities, phishing, and market volatility. Once settled, transactions typically cannot be reversed.

For traders tracking shifts in token flows or bridge volumes—such as those reported by Across and NEAR—maintaining real-time visibility is critical. CryptoAppsy‘s advanced real-time charts and coin-specific news features allow users to monitor asset movements across networks as intent-based infrastructure grows, supporting timely decision-making for those engaging with emerging settlement systems.

User suitability and precautions

Intent-based transactions offer simplicity for users comfortable delegating technical execution to trusted platforms. Developers can leverage these protocols to bridge user interfaces with automated settlement agents.

However, they may not fit individuals who require complete control over each blockchain step or who hesitate to depend on third-party applications or new protocol contracts. Before signing any intent transaction, users should review involved assets, limits, permissions, and networks to avoid errors or compromise. Seed phrases should never be shared for intent fulfillment or in response to any request.
