US spot Bitcoin and Ether ETFs recorded significant net outflows totaling about $530 million on November 5, reversing the previous day’s inflows as both crypto and traditional financial markets pulled back. The outflows reflected a broader downturn that also affected US stocks, while Bitcoin’s price dipped below $76,000 before recovering above that level the following day.

Sharp reversal in ETF flows

On November 5, Cointelegraph reported that US spot Bitcoin funds experienced net outflows of $430.2 million, while Ether funds lost $99.9 million. Combined, the outflows reached approximately $530 million. This reversed the trend from November 4, when Bitcoin and Ether ETFs together attracted $127.6 million in new investments.

According to Farside Investors, the majority of these redemptions were concentrated in several major products. Fidelity’s FBTC saw $199.9 million in net outflows, BlackRock’s IBIT had $105 million leave, and Grayscale’s GBTC recorded $49.9 million in outflows. In the Ether ETF segment, BlackRock’s ETHA reported $75.2 million in withdrawals, while Fidelity’s FETH noted $2.2 million moving out.

TokenPost noted that the sell-off followed a post-election rally, during which Bitcoin briefly climbed above $80,000 after midterm results favored Democrats. With the reversal, IBIT’s outflows marked its fifth consecutive session of net redemptions, totaling over $1 billion since October 30. As of Thursday’s close, Bitcoin ETFs’ year-to-date net flows stood around negative $510 million.

ETF flow data showed that the sizable outflows from major funds such as Fidelity’s FBTC and BlackRock’s IBIT reversed the previous day’s positive inflows, highlighting rapid change in investor sentiment.

Unclear causes behind the redemptions

While ETF data reflect rapid investor moves, reports do not directly connect the withdrawals to the outcome of the midterm elections or any single cause. Analysts referenced by CoinDesk pointed to concerns over technology spending and uncertainty surrounding AI-related infrastructure development as possible factors weighing on both stock and crypto markets.

Some experts suggested that equity losses were prompting managers to trim alternative investments such as crypto. Simon-Peter Massabni of XS.com described how falling stocks led to asset sales in other areas to cover margin calls and reduce leverage. CoinDesk reported total crypto liquidations worth $1.26 billion in the same 24-hour window, including $1.12 billion from long positions.

Market data provided by CoinGecko at 16:13 UTC on November 6 showed Bitcoin trading at $75,451, marking a 0.84% 24-hour decline. Ether traded at $2,218.03, with a 1.64% drop in the same period. The Crypto Fear & Greed Index read 28, which is classified as “Fear,” indicating generally subdued sentiment.

Mini dictionary: The Crypto Fear & Greed Index is a sentiment gauge that scores from 0 (extreme fear) to 100 (extreme greed), providing a broad sense of the cryptocurrency market’s risk appetite based on volatility, trading volume, and market trends.

Broader market impacts and analyst perspectives

Across US markets, stocks fell amid growing investor risk aversion. According to analysts from FalconX and GSR cited by CoinDesk, the sell-off reflected apprehensions about the impact of a Democratic midterm outcome on future AI data center construction and heavy infrastructure spending. However, these links remain interpretations, and no single cause has been confirmed for the ETF outflows.

Volatility in the crypto sector was not isolated from wider financial sentiment. CoinDesk characterized the turn in digital asset prices as part of a broader reduction in exposure to risk assets rather than a move specific to ETFs.

Some analysts associated the pullback in crypto and ETF flows with technology-sector uncertainties, adding that rapid liquidations in leveraged positions contributed to the swift shift in market direction.

Looking ahead for Bitcoin and Ether ETF investors

Analysts noted that single-session net flows may not point to lasting trends. The sharp reversal now places investor attention on whether ETF activity will stabilize or continue to see redemptions in coming days. Future data releases will provide additional clarity on whether the November 5 outflows were an anomaly or the start of a longer-term trend.

With Bitcoin and Ether prices remaining volatile and traditional markets displaying risk-off moves, observers see the ETF withdrawals as an indicator of increased caution, rather than a definitive market signal.

US spot Bitcoin and Ether ETFs lost a combined $530 million on November 5, following $127.6 million in inflows one day prior. While the reversal coincided with broad market weakness and major crypto liquidations, no single causative factor has been identified for this sudden shift in investor activity.
