Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange by volume, has been the target of an AI attack by ChatGPT. Binance claimed that someone was using the viral AI chatbot to conduct a disinformation campaign against the cryptocurrency exchange.
Changpeng Zhao and Binance are the latest victims of ChatGPT
Speaking to Fortune magazine, Binance officials said they have received multiple requests about whether Changpeng Zhao, co-founder and CEO of the cryptocurrency exchange, is an official member of the Chinese Communist Party. They also said they received multiple questions about a chat in which OpenAI’s viral AI chatbot ChatGPT allegedly informed Zhao that it was building a social media platform for China National Petroleum Corporation.
Patrick Hillman, Binance’s chief strategy officer, said that what ChatGPT did was gross disinformation and shared details of a conversation they had with the viral AI chatbot about Binance and Changpeng Zhao. Hillman accused ChatGPT of collecting information from a fake LinkedIn profile of Zhao and a fictitious Forbes article that didn’t exist.
Details of a Chat with ChatGPT about Binance and Changpeng Zhao
In a conversation with OpenAI’s viral chatbot, Hillman asked whether Zhao was an official member of the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) Youth League Committee. Citing publicly available information, ChatGPT stated that Zhao was a member of CNPC when he worked for the company in the 90s. Asked where this information could be found, ChatGPT pointed to a fake LinkedIn profile, claiming that the information appeared in multiple news articles and interviews.
Later, ChatGPT noted that Zhao mentioned his past CNPC experience in an interview with Forbes, stating that the Binance CEO’s role at CNPC was “Software Developer”. In addition to citing his fake LinkedIn profile, ChatGPT also cited a fictitious Forbes article that did not exist.
