Andreessen Horowitz, known in the industry as a16z, has announced a significant shift in its investment focus, broadening the mandate of its newest fund beyond cryptocurrency and blockchain startups to include a wider range of “frontier startups.” This change marks a move into sectors like artificial intelligence, robotics, and cutting-edge biotechnology where new markets may take years to develop.

a16z rebrands, expands vision beyond crypto

The firm’s crypto-focused team will now operate under the name a16z Frontier. The group’s previous a16zcrypto blog now redirects visitors to a newly branded domain, underscoring the transition. In a blog post, managing partner Chris Dixon described the expansion as an evolution rather than a departure, emphasizing that investments in blockchain and digital assets will continue alongside ventures in these emerging technologies.

Dixon noted that as blockchain technologies become more integrated into traditional finance and fintech products, their underlying presence is less visible to users. He believes that companies should increasingly be defined by their functions and impacts, rather than by the specific technologies they use.

Dixon wrote that the team is “expanding the scope of our new fund beyond crypto startups to the broader category of frontier startups,” with ongoing support for crypto and related sectors, while also advocating for balanced regulatory frameworks.

The fund will target companies developing not only crypto applications but also new uses for AI, robotics, autonomous systems, biotechnology, and multidisciplinary startups that blend software, hardware, and services. Dixon argued that crypto technology could enable economic capabilities such as machine-to-machine transactions within these new systems, but stressed that these areas are just examples, not strict boundaries.

The leadership of the new fund will be shared between Chris Dixon, general partners Eddy Lazzarin and Guy Wuollet, and a16z co-founders Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz. Andreessen Horowitz is a Silicon Valley venture capital firm widely recognized for its significant influence in tech and crypto investing.

Leadership changes and industry context

General partner Ali Yahya announced on X that he is departing a16z to move to San Francisco and start a new company. Yahya originally joined a16z’s crypto team in 2017 after serving as a robotics engineer at Google Brain, and became the group’s first full-time crypto team member in 2021. He stated that his next venture will focus on building infrastructure to support open software ecosystems, specifically as AI evolves to encompass collaborative interactions between multiple people and agents. Yahya expressed gratitude to his colleagues and described himself as a “forever a16z superfan.”

Yahya shared that his new company aims to enable “building infrastructure that enables open software ecosystems,” starting from the belief that AI will move beyond one person and one agent to collaborative networks of participants.

This expansion at a16z comes as other major players in the crypto investment space, such as Paradigm, have also broadened their scope. In July, Paradigm announced the launch of a $1.2 billion fund to invest across sectors including AI, robotics, and additional frontier technologies, reflecting a wider trend among leading venture firms.

a16z’s fifth crypto fund closed at $2.2 billion in May, bringing the firm’s total crypto-focused capital to $9.8 billion. However, specific details about the size of the new, broader fund or the portion devoted to non-crypto investments have not yet been disclosed.

The latest developments highlight a growing consensus among leading venture firms that the intersection of digital assets, AI, and advanced technology presents new investment frontiers as traditional labels become less relevant in a rapidly evolving market.
