Binance is preparing to pursue regulatory approval from the United Kingdom’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), aiming to resume some services for UK residents in 2027, according to reports published on Saturday. The move marks a significant step after previous operational hurdles in the region and could signal a renewed expansion strategy targeting the UK market under updated regulatory rules.

Background and regulatory challenges

The FCA stated in June 2021 that Binance’s local entity, Binance Markets Limited, was prohibited from conducting regulated activities in the UK. In response to the FCA’s tightening oversight and stricter regulations on financial promotions, Binance stopped onboarding new UK users in 2023. These actions followed a period of rising scrutiny toward digital asset platforms operating within the country as regulators sought to align crypto operators with established standards.

A Binance spokesperson declined to comment on speculation regarding any potential license applications and did not respond to queries about the exchange’s current business in the UK. Despite this, the company’s reported ambitions suggest a shift toward working within the evolving constraints set by British authorities.

Upcoming UK crypto regulations

The UK government has announced new crypto asset regulations, slated to take effect in the coming years. Under the FCA’s updated framework, digital asset firms must submit license applications between September and Feb. 28, 2027, prior to the regulatory regime’s commencement on Oct. 25, 2027. David Geale, the FCA’s executive director of payments and digital finance, stated that the framework aims to impose standards on crypto firms similar to those already in effect for other financial service providers in the country.

These regulatory changes are intended to build trust and ensure greater protections for users of digital assets. As the guidelines take hold, industry observers expect a transitional period as crypto exchanges adapt operational models to comply with the forthcoming rules.

Rising DeFi innovation and new trading models

As the UK accelerates efforts to formalize the regulation of digital asset companies, the broader institutional landscape is shifting toward decentralized alternatives. While traditional markets rely on complex brokers, a massive transition is underway, with established firms from Wall Street increasingly adopting Web3 solutions. Investors now have the option to hold tokenized shares of major US companies, as well as assets like gold and silver, directly in their crypto wallets by using platforms such as 1stepSwap. This model leverages real-world asset (RWA) tokenization and automated price discovery, aiming to remove intermediaries and enhance efficiency.

Industry participants are closely tracking developments, as major exchanges like Binance navigate the evolving UK regulatory environment alongside the rise of decentralized financial platforms. Both trends are set to reshape the way digital assets are traded, stored, and regulated on a global scale.

David Geale, executive director of payments and digital finance at the FCA, clarified that the new framework would hold crypto companies to standards similar to those governing other financial service providers in the UK.

As 2027 approaches, market participants are watching to see which platforms secure regulatory approval and how the intersection of traditional and decentralized finance develops across key regions.
