Block, Inc., led by Jack Dorsey, has rolled out a major update to its Square point-of-sale platform, making Bitcoin payments via the Lightning Network the automatic default for eligible businesses. The change, which applies to millions of merchants across the United States except in New York State, marks a landmark in mainstream cryptocurrency acceptance. Previously an opt-in feature, Bitcoin payment support is now enabled by default, though merchants retain the flexibility to switch off the feature through their settings if desired.

With the upgraded platform, customers can pay using Bitcoin by scanning a QR code, leveraging the Lightning Network for near-instant transactions. By default, transactions are settled in U.S. dollars, offering stability for merchants. However, should a business choose, it can keep all or part of its Bitcoin payments as Bitcoin rather than converting them, giving flexibility over treasury management and exposure to digital assets.

Square, the payments arm within Block, has long been a popular POS and financial platform for small and medium-sized businesses. Its ongoing investment in Bitcoin integration stands out, and this latest move is viewed as an additional tool for companies to manage their balance sheets.

The updated system also allows merchants to automatically convert a set percentage of their daily card sales into Bitcoin. This regular, almost effortless accumulation approach broadens strategic options for businesses, providing a simple way to diversify reserves with cryptocurrency.

Low transaction fees and wide accessibility stand out

Bitcoin transactions made through Square will not incur any processing fees until the end of 2026. Afterwards, a flat 1% transaction fee will apply, positioning Square’s crypto payment option as more cost-effective than most traditional card payments. The absence of chargeback risks further enhances its appeal for business owners, adding another layer of security to digital currency acceptance.

Square’s infrastructure works seamlessly with existing hardware and software, requiring no special setup or additional investment from merchants. This technical compatibility significantly lowers the barrier for both large retailers and small enterprises to start accepting Bitcoin.

With around 4 million businesses participating in the Square ecosystem, even if a minority opts to retain Bitcoin, it could create significant institutional demand. For instance, a 5% adoption rate would mean around 200,000 businesses holding Bitcoin on their balance sheets, potentially shaping broader market trends.

The revised terms of use took effect on March 16, 2026, with several users spotting the policy shift early. Block employees noted that this development came to light thanks to scrutiny and feedback from the community.

Launched as a gradual transition at the end of 2025, Block’s move has now reached widespread implementation. Beyond payment facilitation, the updated infrastructure also supports businesses that wish to treat Bitcoin as a store of value, addressing evolving needs for treasury diversification and digital asset management.
