Franklin Templeton, a global asset management firm overseeing $1.8 trillion in assets, has announced the registration of two innovative exchange-traded funds (ETFs) designed to blend traditional U.S. stock investing with gradual exposure to Bitcoin. The new funds, titled the Franklin US Equity Bitcoin DRIP Index ETF (FBEQ) and the Franklin US Innovation Bitcoin DRIP Index ETF (FIBT), mark a further expansion of the firm’s activity in the cryptocurrency investment sector.
New ETFs combine equities and Bitcoin allocation
Unlike most spot Bitcoin ETFs that directly track the price of the cryptocurrency, FBEQ and FIBT will primarily invest in U.S. equities, allocating 95% of their portfolios to stocks while dedicating the remaining 5% to Bitcoin-related assets.
Franklin Templeton stated that the core strategy behind these ETFs is to let investors benefit from both traditional equity markets and incremental cryptocurrency exposure in a single product, thus offering a differentiated investment approach in traditional finance.
Both funds aim to accumulate Bitcoin over time by channeling dividend income from U.S. stocks into digital asset exposure, eliminating the need for direct crypto purchases by the investor.
How the dividend reinvestment process works
The distinguishing feature of these two ETFs is their application of a dividend reinvestment plan (DRIP), where dividends paid out by the underlying U.S. stocks are used to purchase Bitcoin-related assets instead of simply acquiring additional company shares.
According to filings, the DRIP mechanism will apply to both regular and special dividends, which will be reinvested in Bitcoin-related assets on the trading day immediately following the ex-dividend date. This method offers a structured path for investors to steadily increase their Bitcoin allocations without requiring hands-on involvement in cryptocurrency trading.
Mini dictionary: DRIP (Dividend Reinvestment Plan), a program that automatically uses dividends from investment holdings to buy more of the same asset or related assets, compounding growth over time.
Gradual Bitcoin accumulation via equity exposure
Through the structured reinvestment of dividends, FBEQ and FIBT are designed to slowly build a position in Bitcoin-related assets alongside substantial exposure to the U.S. stock market. This hybrid approach seeks to attract investors looking for diversified portfolios that include digital assets but who may prefer not to manage cryptocurrency purchases themselves.
Franklin Templeton currently offers the Franklin Bitcoin ETF (EZBC), a spot Bitcoin product that has attracted cumulative net inflows of approximately $335 million. The introduction of FBEQ and FIBT now brings an alternative product structure that integrates cryptocurrencies into more conventional portfolios through automatic mechanisms.
| Product | Type | Main Strategy | Net Bitcoin Exposure | Current Inflows |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EZBC | Spot Bitcoin ETF | Direct Bitcoin investment | 100% | $335 million |
| FBEQ/FIBT | Equity-Bitcoin DRIP ETF | 95% US equities, 5% Bitcoin; dividends reinvested in Bitcoin | Up to 5%, grows over time via DRIP | N/A (newly registered) |
This latest move highlights Franklin Templeton’s ongoing effort to offer diversified investment opportunities for both traditional and digital asset markets. The firm aims to provide products that can cater to varying investor interests and risk appetites within the evolving landscape of crypto finance.
