Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has updated the network’s long-term technical roadmap, placing a stronger emphasis on cryptographic technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) tools. In a post on X, Buterin said he compared the latest “Strawmap”—an evolving outline of Ethereum’s priorities—to the original 2023 roadmap to highlight significant changes in direction.

Shift in technical priorities

Buterin explained that the new Strawmap contains several elements not present in last year’s vision, reflecting adjustments to Ethereum’s evolving needs. He pointed out that “some completely new things are in the strawmap that are not in this diagram, because they were not in the 2023 roadmap at all.”

The updated outline includes not only the introduction of native rollups and a broader exploration of possibilities beyond the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), but also a significant focus on cryptographic advances using STARKs and on AI-assisted formal verification.

Emphasis on STARKs and AI-assisted verification

STARKs, or Scalable Transparent ARguments of Knowledge, are cryptographic protocols that verify computations while ensuring privacy and scalability. Buterin stated that Ethereum’s development is “increasingly relying on STARKs” and on verification processes where AI helps ensure the correctness of core protocol operations. He noted that recent progress in AI technology is making it practical to apply these verification techniques more extensively.

Mini dictionary: STARKs, or Scalable Transparent ARguments of Knowledge, are a cryptographic proof system designed to improve scalability and security by allowing verification of computations without revealing underlying data, and are seen as a more efficient alternative to older systems such as SNARKs.

Buterin emphasized the importance of these tools for Ethereum’s safety, writing, “This can only be safe with formal verification, which is itself only feasible with modern AI tools.”

Buterin highlighted that changing priorities have led to completely new initiatives on the roadmap, and he underscored that safe application of advanced cryptographic verification is only possible with the assistance of modern AI technologies.

Post-quantum security measures

Ethereum’s updated technical direction arrives as the project accelerates preparations for “Q-Day,” a term referring to the potential risk quantum computers might pose to existing cryptographic defenses.

In January, Buterin called on developers to begin adopting quantum-resistant cryptography to stay ahead of potential threats. The Ethereum Foundation responded by forming a dedicated post-quantum team. In February, Buterin detailed a phased strategy to overhaul four components in Ethereum’s cryptographic architecture that could be vulnerable to quantum attacks.

Recent plans involve replacing potentially weak parts of Ethereum’s cryptography with post-quantum solutions, initiated through a structured, phased process outlined by Buterin earlier this year.

Expanding beyond the EVM

The Strawmap also maps out a broader vision for Ethereum’s future, including possibilities that extend beyond its established computing model, the EVM. Native rollups and new cryptographic frameworks are expected to play a central role in scaling the network and increasing resilience.
