Vitalik Buterin, one of Ethereum’s co-founders, has called for a significant shift in the platform’s strategic direction. In his latest remarks to the blockchain community, Buterin argued that Ethereum’s roadmap should now prioritize freedom, privacy, and protecting digital lives over purely financial applications. While Ethereum has long been celebrated for its focus on decentralization and technological progress, Buterin expressed concern that the platform is not harnessing its full technological potential.
Concerns Over Privacy and Digital Rights
Widely regarded as a visionary in the cryptocurrency ecosystem, Buterin pointed to mounting anxieties over growing government and corporate surveillance, the social consequences of artificial intelligence, and rising polarization on social media. He highlighted that, so far, Ethereum’s network has not played a sufficiently meaningful role in addressing these issues.
As examples of impactful projects, Buterin cited endeavors like Starlink, open-source AI models, and the encrypted messaging app Signal, which all offer tangible benefits for users. In contrast, he remarked that Ethereum’s own impact in this domain has remained fairly limited.
“Through conversations with many people, I have repeatedly witnessed that the current state of the world—marked by increased state oversight, corporate dominance, and social media’s descent into arenas of conflict—has become a serious source of concern,” Buterin stated.
Defining “Sanctuary Tech”
Buterin’s concept of “sanctuary tech” refers to open-source, resilient technologies outside the reach of external pressures, granting users true digital autonomy. He emphasized that such tools empower individuals to communicate, manage finances, and collaborate collectively, all without interference from centralized authorities.
Buterin underscored that Ethereum’s core mission should extend beyond revamping financial infrastructure; it must also resist consolidation of power by any single group. He pushed for the creation of systems where not just the victors, but even those on the losing side, have their rights safeguarded—a platform designed for everyone engaged in power dynamics.
Calling for a Broader Blockchain Ecosystem
Buterin warned that a narrow concentration on financial use-cases risks stunting Ethereum’s vision. In his view, while decentralized finance mechanisms can address certain problems, they fall short when it comes to advancing digital freedom and meaningful privacy.
He thus encouraged the Ethereum community to work toward a holistic digital ecosystem. This system should integrate not only software and hardware, but also AI-powered interfaces and robust physical security measures. Central to this approach is the idea of digital spaces that are ownerless and serve the common good.
For Buterin, technology only fulfills its promise if it responds to the real needs of users. He stressed the importance of developing solutions targeted at people facing oppression or restrictions imposed by centralized systems, insisting that the most vulnerable must not be left behind.
