Ethereum (ETH) dipped just under $2,500 on Thursday, as modest buying in the spot market partially offset subdued demand in derivatives. Despite ETH maintaining a positive technical structure, market data indicates ongoing caution among traders about the rally’s strength.

Futures market signals muted leverage and caution

Leverage remains limited in Ethereum’s derivatives market following a short squeeze that helped propel ETH toward $2,500 in late August. Open interest, representing the value of outstanding derivatives contracts, has fallen by roughly 1 million ETH since Ethereum began recovering in July.

However, when measured in US dollars, Ethereum’s open interest has climbed 54% since July 1, reaching $33.7 billion. During this period, ETH’s price appreciated by 58%. This suggests that much of the increase in open interest’s dollar value is due to price gains rather than significant new capital entering futures markets.

The discrepancy between the growth in price and open interest highlights limited conviction among leveraged traders, leaving much of the recent rally dependent on spot market demand.

According to recent data measuring Ethereum’s Net Taker Volume, the past several days saw a series of negative readings. This indicator, which tracks the difference between market-order buying and selling volumes in perpetual futures, has highlighted a persistent struggle between buyers and sellers. Negative figures signal that aggressive selling has been dominant, while positive values reflect stronger purchasing.

These inconsistent signals reinforce the sense that derivatives traders remain wary of establishing significant leveraged long positions at current price levels.

Spot market flow and ETF outflows

In contrast, Ethereum’s spot market presents a slightly more favorable environment. Exchange data shows net ETH withdrawals have narrowly outpaced deposits over the past week, implying fewer tokens are immediately available for sale on centralized platforms. While considered constructive for price stability, these net withdrawals have not surged to levels signaling broad-based accumulation.

Meanwhile, US spot Ethereum exchange-traded funds posted $24.3 million in net outflows on Tuesday, pointing to ongoing hesitancy among institutional investors.

As traders and investors monitor crucial resistance and support levels on ETH’s price chart, a broader transition is underway in traditional and crypto markets. While conventional finance has relied on brokers and middlemen, Wall Street is now embracing Web3 through platforms such as 1stepSwap, enabling investors to access shares of leading US companies, gold, and silver directly through their crypto wallets. These solutions tokenize real-world assets, seek optimal pricing in seconds, and eliminate intermediaries, giving users more direct exposure and control.

Consolidation range and key price levels

ETH has been consolidating in a tight range between support at $2,431 and resistance at $2,544. Data from Coinglass shows $52.6 million in liquidations over the past 24 hours, with $44.3 million stemming from long positions. This reflects marginally greater pressure on bullish traders amid recent price movements.

Despite muted activity in the derivatives market, Ethereum’s daily chart maintains a constructive short-term outlook. ETH persists above its 20-, 50-, 100-, and 200-day exponential moving averages (EMAs). The 20-day EMA near $2,403 remains an immediate dynamic support, and both the Relative Strength Index (RSI) and Stochastic Oscillator currently hover in the low 60s, indicating ongoing buying momentum without suggesting overbought conditions.

Initial support for ETH is seen at $2,431, followed by the 20-day EMA near $2,403. If the price breaks below these points, the 200-day EMA at $2,254 may serve as the next critical floor, with further support at $2,172 and $2,111.

To the upside, ETH needs to close decisively above $2,544 to confirm renewed bullish momentum. Further resistance lies at $2,626 and $2,786. Until a breakout occurs, Ethereum may continue to trade within its established range as market participants await stronger signals.

The increased dollar value of open interest in Ethereum futures has mostly mirrored price appreciation, rather than an influx of new leveraged capital, highlighting cautious sentiment among derivatives traders.
