The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has issued an emergency alert titled “Pause Before You Pay,” highlighting a sharp increase in scams involving cryptocurrency ATMs. The agency officially named demands for payments via crypto ATMs as a significant fraud indicator, citing new data and recent industry developments.

Sharp rise in crypto ATM fraud cases

Prompted by ongoing infrastructure problems and a notable uptick in crypto-related fraud, the CFTC pointed to fresh FBI data showing American losses from crypto ATM scams soared 58% over the past year, now surpassing $388 million. This growth has raised new concerns about consumer safety and regulatory oversight.

Officials stated that any instruction to transfer money using a public crypto terminal by someone claiming to represent a government agency or a bank should be treated as a likely scam. The CFTC used the phrase “Probably a Scam” to describe such requests, urging the public to exercise extreme caution.

Any request to use a crypto ATM for payments to a government office, bank, or major company is almost certainly fraudulent and should be regarded as a red flag for criminal behavior, according to the CFTC.

Industry challenges and regulatory crackdown

The crypto ATM sector has faced a series of critical setbacks in recent months. In May, Bitcoin Depot, the largest US operator in the industry, filed for bankruptcy. The company shut down its network of 9,700 terminals after a steep drop in revenue following enforcement of mandatory identity checks for users.

Regulatory measures have intensified. In June, lawmakers in Delaware and New Jersey enacted stringent laws to limit the use of crypto ATMs after identifying the terminals as common channels for moving stolen money. The market contracted sharply in July, losing nearly one-third of its machines as 10,836 units were removed worldwide, 10,380 of them in the US.

In August, Minnesota authorities imposed a total ban on all crypto ATMs. Operators were ordered to remove every terminal from public locations by the end of the year.

How scammers operate and next steps

The CFTC emphasized that crypto ATMs offer unique vulnerabilities for consumers. These machines transfer funds in only one direction, making transaction reversals impossible and enabling fraudsters to quickly move stolen assets into anonymous wallets.

Criminals often impersonate IRS officials, bank representatives, or tech support staff. Using psychological manipulation, they instill a sense of urgency and pressure victims into sending money without careful consideration.

According to authorities, victims usually withdraw cash, find the nearest crypto ATM, and scan a QR code provided by the scammer. The terminal immediately converts the fiat money into cryptocurrency, which is sent to an untraceable destination, preventing any possibility of recovery.

The CFTC reaffirmed that no government office, financial institution, or large corporation will ever request payments through crypto ATMs or gift cards. Mentioning these payment channels during any interaction should be seen as direct evidence of a scam attempt.

Mini dictionary: CFTC (Commodity Futures Trading Commission), a US federal agency overseeing derivatives and futures markets, supervises aspects of the crypto industry relevant to commodities and works to prevent fraud and manipulative practices.

Legitimate agencies and companies do not demand payment via crypto ATMs or similar anonymous methods. Any such request should be treated as a clear indication of criminal intent.
